“Jules, it’s almost your birthday! What do you want to do?” Dani asked him as she lay against his shoulder while they were all sitting around the TV.

“I don’t know. I don’t want anything too big.” Julian loved to party, but this year he wasn’t really in the mood.

“Oh, when’s your birthday?” Trent asked.

“August 1st, and it’s on a Wednesday so we can’t really get wild.”

“We can get wild if you want,” Dani whispered in his ear, making him shuffle in his seat as he tried not to think of what they could do. Dani giggled as she watched him struggle to keep a straight face. He glanced over at her and gave her that half smile that created butterflies in her stomach and made her instantly melt. Dani traced her fingers up and down his thigh, careful not to go too high, and with his arm around her shoulder, he tapped his fingers softly up and down her right arm as they both stared into each other’s eyes.

“-what do you think Julian?” Jayden asked, breaking the gaze between Julian and Dani. They forgot that there was a room full of people, but no one seemed to notice that they had lost track of the conversation.

“What?” Julian had stopped listening to the conversation as soon as Dani had whispered in his ear and so he made Jayden repeat the question.

“Why don’t we just go and play a few games of laser tag, maybe some bowling, have a nice dinner?” Jayden suggested for the second time.

“Uh, yeah sounds great. But it’ll all have to be at night because Dani is still at school and she has to come with us,” he stated. There was no way he was going to celebrate his birthday without his best friend there.

“Umm, just because you’re not at school with me anymore, doesn’t mean that I won’t take the day off for your birthday. It’s tradition!” She reminded him. Every year, no matter what, Julian and Dani never went to school on each other’s birthday. They preferred to spend that day with the people who mattered, and so they only ever spent that day with each other.

“You guys are the cutest! I wish I had a best friend like that to do cute things with. It’s actually really touching.” Will expressed. The rest of the boys laughed at him before agreeing. They all envied Julian and Dani’s relationship. Being best friends for almost 17 years, they had a different connection to everyone else. It was stronger. They understood each other more than any other couple their age would because they had a friendship as a foundation to their relationship. They knew about all the ups and downs in each other lives. They had no secrets, nothing to hide from each other, nothing to turn against each other, because they trusted each other more than anyone in the world.

“Aw, thanks Will!” Dani felt appreciative. “Having Julian there for me has honestly been the best part of my life. I don’t know where I’d be, or what I would’ve done if he hadn’t been there to support me when I needed him. I had a taste of what life was like without him for a couple of weeks and it was horrible-”

“Sorry again about that,” Julian interrupted. Every time he thought about it he felt terribly guilty.

“That’s okay babe, I’ve forgiven you. But it was honestly the worst thing I’ve ever been through, only because I was so used to him, used to his company, used to his presence in general. I guess that’s why we’re so close. Because we don’t know how life is without each other.”

“Yeah I’d have to agree. Trying to stay away from you was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. But I guess it was worth it cause now I get to call you my girlfriend,” he smiled. Dani couldn’t restrain herself anymore. She leaned in and pressed her lips against his before he cupped her face with his free hand. She turned her body so that it was facing him, which meant that she was almost on top of him. Their kiss was getting deeper and they forgot the other boys were in the room.

“Uh... I’m just going to go and grab a drink. Anyone want to come with me?” Jayden said as he began to walk out of the room and into the kitchen.

“Yeah mate, I think all three of us will join you too,” Zach replied as he, Will and Trent all got up and followed him.

Dani and Julian still hadn’t realised that the other boys had left the room. She sat on his lap, her body facing his, with one leg on either side of him. He had his hands on either side of her waist, while she cupped his face with hers, only breaking their kiss for a breath. It had only been a week since they started dating, but to them it felt like it was forever. They both loved each other, more than they could express, and their situation finally felt so right.

“Well, that escalated quickly,” Zach commented as they walked back into the room.

Julian and Dani suddenly realised what was going on. They broke apart and Dani laughed, putting her head between his neck and shoulder. Julian laughed with her.

“Sorry guys, we forgot you were here,” Julian apologised.

“No worries, we get it.” Trent laughed as they boys went back and sat on the couches.

“I’m going to go and book Julian’s birthday plans...” Dani awkwardly got up. “I’ll see you guys soon.” She said before she gave Julian a quick peck on the lips and a wave to the rest of the boys. As she walked out of the house, she texted Julian:

‘Hahaha how embarrassing! Completely forgot they were there... But seriously, there’s your preview for your birthday ;) xxx’

Julian received his text and smiled.

“Have fun Julian?” Jayden asked as he cheekily smiled.

Julian laughed and slapped him across the head, “Shut up.” He messaged Dani back:

‘You’re such a tease. Can’t wait ;) xxx’
