Chapter 14:
Minjee stared at Donghae's back while she waits for him outside of the ice cream shop. It's only now that she realized how lonely it must have been for him. She felt bad because she knows how that feels.
Her eyes wandered around the streets, flash of memories hit her but they're not that clear. She was young back then. But she knows Mokpo is home. It was home. She thought. She doesn't even remember why they had to move when they were doing well.
-Flashback-
It's Minjee's birthday. She had so much fun playing with Siwon. When the party is about to end, her dad addressed the visitors,
"Thank you all for coming today," He said, "I sincerely appreciate everyone for joining us here tonight to celebrate my daughter's sixth birthday."
He continued, "Before you leave, I want to make a quick announcement."
She glanced at her brother, he was looking down and trembling. His eyes look blank and empty. What is wrong with him? She thought. He didn't look like that when he fetched me from the playground earlier.
The guests fell silent, expecting. "This will be her last birthday in Mokpo." He said carefully. The guests looked at each other, confused.
"We'll be leaving in a few days to Seoul and stay there for good." He forced a smile, "Me and my wife decided it's what's best for our kids. Thank you for coming tonight, when we see each other again in the future, I hope you greet us." He finished then walked down the small stage.
Minjee ran towards him, "Appa, why are we leaving?" she asked,
He kissed her forehead but didn't say anything. He went towards Ryeowook's direction, held his hand and walked away with him.
-
Minjee has always admire his dad. He protected her all her life. When she gets in trouble, her dad had always been there for her.
Her eyes landed back on Donghae. What's taking him so long? She thought. She looked closely, and the server wasn't the same as earlier. She felt annoyance build up insider her, the new server is flirting with him.
Her hand gestures and the way she looked at him; the way she smiled when he talked. Donghae, on the other hand, seemed friendly but not entirely interested. Aish. This girl. She looked at her with a grim expression.
Every now and then, she saw her giggle as Donghae smiled, looking cute. Ya, this playboy.
A thought ran into her mind. Minjee walked inside, "Babe, what's taking you so long?" She asked sweetly, forcing a smile. Donghae seemed taken aback. The new server glanced at her, eyes widened.
When Donghae recovered his composure, "I-uh... I'm coming." He smirked, looking at her amused. Minjee looked at the girl, her eyebrow raised. Her eyes glancing up and down towards her. You thought he's going to ask you out? Too bad. She wanted to say. The server rolled her eyes and Donghae winked at Minjee. Embarrassed, she took one last glance at them and left.
After a while, Donghae came out with a paper bag. "What was that?" He asked, Minjee glared at him, and ignored him. She started walking first,
Donghae caught her hand, "Ya, I'm talking to you." He said, his eyes dancing with amusement.
"You kept me waiting." She forced a smile,
"You're getting moody again." He mumbled, her smile dropped.
