Pitter Patter. The rain was falling softly on a nice August evening. Scarlet who was a rambunctious 12 year old was sitting in her house on her bed, playing with her favorite doll, whose name was Roxy by the way. "Roxy, why won't you just drink the tea I made you?" She asked her doll in the nicest way possible. Scarlette's infectious smile slowly turned to a frown as she remembered that her father used to play with her. Not since he got a job at Essels technology factory. Essels was the biggest technology manufacturer in the world. Her father always wanted to work in a place filled with computers, but he never expected to work in a place where the technology was made. Eventually, he worked his way up to the assistant supervisor to supervisor and finally to his current job as head of manufacturing. He enjoyed his job and got paid for doing it. but with a large amount of his salary came long hours watching over and making sure the factory ran smoothly. which meant less time at home and more time at work. This was bad for a couple of reasons. This meant that Scarlette spent more time with her babysitter than with her father. Ever since her mother passed away, Scarlette was always pretty childish. She just never seemed to be able to grow up without her mother. which wasn't all bad. it meant she could continue to be daddy's little girl. but with her father being at work most of the day Scarlette decided to keep to herself. even in school, she didn't talk to anyone besides her teachers. but that didn't mean she wasn't smart. she was one of the smartest kids in her class. in fact, a few of her teachers talked about having her skip a grade. but they all agreed that skipping a grade would become a reality if she learned to talk to other people besides her teachers. but Scarlette didn't want to. soon she grew tired of playing by herself and packed her doll away. she turned off her light and got into bed. she pulled the covers over her head. and tried to figure out how she could play dolls without her father as she slowly drifted off into a long and restless sleep.
4 YEARS LATER
RING RING! Scarlette, now 16 years old, goes to answer the phone. "hello?" the person on the phone answers in a loud and commanding voice. "Yes, Hello Simon?" Scarlette pulls the phone back a little from her ear to avoid going deaf. "he's probably sleeping. I'll go wake him up." she rests the phone on the table and goes to her father's room. There is a voice at the back of her head that tells her something is wrong. her father never wakes up late. she looks at the clock. it's 6:27 in the morning. in fact, he should have been at work by now. maybe that was why Mr. Savoi was calling their house. She takes a deep breath to prepare herself for the worst. She opens the door slowly and is happy but disappointed at the same time. and both for the same reason. her father is not there. she lets out a sigh of relief and goes back to the phone. "sorry Mr. Savoi my father must have left already." She can hear a pencil tapping on the other side of the phone. "Ok well thanks anyway Starlette." his nickname for her. he wants her to be just as big as her father." your welcome" she hangs up the phone and plops on the couch. she likes her dads boss with his stocky build and loud voice, Mr. Savoi takes control of a room with ease. she knows she should be worried that her father is not at work yet, but he's probably running late. and besides she's up earlier than she normally would be. her alarm clock isn't set to ring for another hour. she decides to start getting ready anyway. at least she might get to school early for once in her life.
Scarlette goes into her room to grab her phone. she presses the home button and sighs. for a moment she forgot she doesn't have any friends. oh well, who needs friends when you have your thoughts and imagination. she goes into the bathroom to take a shower when from 3 blocks away comes the sound of an ambulance. she jumps at the sound and remembers how her mother died. Scarlette was too little to remember all the details, but she did remember hearing an ambulance and remembers never seeing her mother after that day. her father decided she was too young to go to the funeral. she collects herself and pulls back the curtains and jumps again. another ambulance has passed by. but this time it stops 2 blocks away. now she is curious more than anything. she goes to the front curtain and pulls back the curtains just a bit. she sees the ambulance and a couple of people scattered on the sidewalk down the block. there are also a couple of cops and onlookers being nosy. as she's watching her phone gets an amber alert. the sound is close enough to the siren of an ambulance that it causes her to jump and close the curtains. she unlocks her phone and presses on the alert. she always listens to these things, just in case something happens she could be ready.
As she reads the color drains from her fast and she covers her mouth to stop her from vomiting.
