She woke to him buttoning his shirt. He was perched on the edge of the bed, tentatively focused on the arduous task of making sure he got the buttons in the right holes. She sat up, clutching the bed covers to her. It was still dark outside, and the rain pattered against the windows.

"What are you doing?" She asked him. Having not heard, nor felt the gentle tug of the bed covers, he turned, surprised, to look at her. He smiled. He loved the way she looked in the morning, her ruffled hair, the sleepy look on her face- she still managed to look beautiful, even without trying.

"It's freezing. Come back to bed," she persisted. "There's no use going out in this weather."

He stood from the side of the bed, pulling his trousers up.

"Have you ever smelt a rose after fresh rain?" He asked her. His voice was jolly and pleasant, yet seemed ever so slightly mischievous. He had that wild glint in his eye, and she knew he wouldn't be pushed from his crazy idea.

"No, I haven't," she replied, sinking back in to the bed. She pulled the covers up to the chin, her nose, trying to hide the smile beneath them. "Why?"

"No reason." He pulled on his boots, and walked to the cloak cupboard. He hurriedly snatched something from the shelf, before smuggling it in his coat. She tried, curiously, to see what he was hiding, yet found that the big, thick black coat hid the item too well. He put both on the drawing cabinet next to the door, before returning to his perched position on the bed.

He leaned over, kissing her tenderly on the nose. She giggled. Inquisitively, she guessed at the item he had hidden beneath his coat. "What's in the box?"

He pulled back, grinning, rising from the bed to leave. Stopping in the doorway, he called back over his shoulder, "Don't open it untill after I've left."

She waited until she heard his footsteps on the stairs before throwing the bed covers from herself. She shivered as the cold morning air pecked her naked frame, raising goose-pimples on her arms. She crept from the bed, rubbing her arms, and nimbly slid into the nightgown she had cast off the previous night during their frolicking, approaching the chair where he had left his coat and the package.

It was then his footsteps come thundering back up the stairs.

Giggling, she dashed for the bed, diving under the covers, cowering beneath them as though they were a leaden shield.

Out of breath, he appeared in the doorway, grinning like a madman.

"Don't you dare," she said sternly, chastising him, unable to hide the smile in her voice. As he advanced slowly toward the bed, she reached over to the bedside table, reaching for her perfume. He dived on to the bed at her, snatching the bed covers from her with a laughing roar, and preceded to blow his warm breath on her stomach, making crude noises. Laughing at his childish assault, and determined to drive him back, she began to spray him with the sweet smelling perfume.

"AAH!" he called, falling backward and off of the bed in mock pain. Quivering on the floor as though suffering through convulsions, he babbled, "Aaah! Sweet.... Girly..... Smell!"

He fell about the place until she chased him from the bedroom and down the stairs, laughing maniacally.

He opened the door, running down the steps on to the front drive. He ran halfway towards the gate, before he stopped and ran back to her. She sprayed his chin with perfume before he grabbed her waist, pulling her to him. He looked her in the eyes, beautiful, shining green, a warm smile upon her lips.

He leaned into her, and she into him, their lips locking passionately.

When at last they separated, he kissed her nose, looked her in the eye, and said those three words he had halted himself from saying before.
