It's crazy how your whole life can change in a matter of seconds. I thought looking at the rubble of the broken castle around me, looking at the families searching for one another, pleading that their loved ones made it through the battle, the grieving faces when they found a loved one who had perished, the ones filled with joy when they were reunited, I couldn't stop to appreciate them all now, I had to find one face in particular. I had to find him.*flashback*
It was my eleventh birthday, I had a great mum and dad, they had planned a huge surprise party for me, but the biggest surprise was one they knew nothing of. I spent the night dancing with my friends, playing all the party games you can think of, truth or dare, spin the bottle, the lot of them, I had never thought life would be better. That is all I could think when I laid down in bed, my eyes had just barely closed when I heard a tapping at my window. I thought for sure it was the boy from the party that I had snogged throwing pebbles at my window but when I opened the blinds, I found it was in all actuality a small barn owl. Its head turned sideways as it tapped again to get my attention.
What in the bloody hell is a barn owl doing at my window?! I wanted to call for help, call mum and dad but my voice caught in my throat as I noticed the parchment tied to the owl.
A letter? Against my better judgement I opened the window, I expected the owl to attack me, to swoop in and peck my eyes out or something but he simply flew to my dresser and perched himself on my mirror while lazily turning the foot with the letter towards me. I reached for it cautiously and as if the owl noticed my fear he covered his face with his wing. I smiled and untied the note. It was addressed to me...from somewhere called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It said I had been accepted to come to this school to learn magic. It said I was a witch. I ran to my parents room the owl following me the whole time.
As I opened the door to my parents room the owl flew in and my parents screamed but I paid that no mind, I was going to be a witch...I was going to learn magic. My parents didn't believe me when I first told them, but when they read the note and saw the string still tied to the owl where the letter had been they agreed that I could go. That's when we realized we had a greater problem...how were we going to get me to a fancy magic school when we hadn't known magic to exist until moments before.
As if on cue when my father asked how we were to get these supplies a tapping sound came from their window. Tap tap tap. My father got up and pulled back the curtains to reveal another owl, this time an all brown owl who looked nothing like the first owl - I later learned this to be called a tawny owl – perched on the windowsill with a letter tied to his foot the same as the barn owl had in my room. I begged dad to open the window, he huffed and carefully let the owl in, he landed on the mirror next to the first owl and stretched his foot out for me to get the letter. It said that if I accepted the offer to Hogwarts someone from the school would be sent to get me in three days time to take me to purchase my belongings. I looked at my mum then my dad, the slip in my hand ready for them to sign and return to the owl saying I wanted to go to Hogwarts. With a loud sigh dad reached for the paper.
"Hand me my pen princess, you're going to Hogwarts." I squealed as I grabbed a pen from the pocket of his jacket that was laid in the arm chair, rushing it to him, we tucked the letter back into the tie on the first owls foot, the second taking off before we could finish signing the forms. The owl squawked once before circling around me and then out the window, I watched it fly into the dark night sky and knew that in three days time my life would never be the same...
The next three days I spent packing and unpacking my bag, I must have done it about a hundred times by now but I just wasn't sure what I would need at a magic school. Mum came in when I let out a frustrated huff.
