Its said that the children have fears,
And parents say shush, and wipe away tears,
But he knew there was something in that cupboard,
He knew, and as he thought that he shuddered.

Something had also moved under the bed,
"Must be the cat," he'd thought in his head,
But he'd then felt a presence in the room,
Something unseen, scary, it made his heart boom,

Mummy and daddy really didn't care,
They knew there was nothing there,
If only their child could understand,
Scared of the dark, he'd never be a man,

How many parents leave their child alone,
Then watch them grow up wild and forlorn,
They blame their child for being perilous,
Yet when he needed them, they were treacherous.

The scary thing that had moved in the dark,
Was now inside of him and lived in his heart,
They moved together everywhere as one,
Only separating if the angel had come,

These were the brief periods in his life,
Getting lots of praise when there was no strife,
To think that all of this could have been prevented,
If only his parents could have just remembered,

Like every now and then give a hug and a kiss,
And a few words of comfort they would not miss,
They now reap the harvest of their indifference,
Watching their son grow up with insolence,

"Honey, our son is in and out of jail,
With the policemen always on his tail,
It seems he's destined for the penitentiary,
Anytime might just be the last of him we'll see,
But there's one thing l must remark,
Our son is not afraid of the dark."
