''Marina, if you take one more second, we're leaving without you.'' My sister, Jasmine, yelled from the living room. We have a wedding we are supposed to get to, but I arrived late from work and have been rushing for the past 15 minutes trying to make myself look a little bit more presentable.
I pulled my light brown hair into a tight knot on the top of my head and touched up on my makeup from this morning which has held up impressively. I walked into the living room giving Jasmine and her boyfriend Laurence a sheepish smile, ''I know you guys love me.''
Jasmine glared at me while getting off our sofa and dragging Laurence out of our apartment. I moved in with the couple during my second year of university after realizing how disgusting dorms can be and they were in search for a housemate.
Today happens to be my aunt's wedding. Third wedding. But who are we to judge a woman like Aunt Katherine just for making a poor judgement while choosing a husband, or two poor judgements? Aunt Kat has been a breath of fresh air into our very strict family and she always took an extra step to take care of Jasmine and I knowing how hard it is growing up with parents that never let you feel comfortable around them.
We get to the wedding with a few minutes to spare with my earlier delay and I head straight up to the bridal room to check on my aunt as I already knew the place being the person that almost nearly planned the entire wedding. Aunt Kat always said I had a good taste in such matters.
I knocked the door lightly and heard a faint 'come in.' I walked in to see Aunt Kat alone looking beautiful in her lace gown, she looks at me through the mirror and I give her a soft reassuring smile. She has been on her nerves because she knew how the family will be judging her, even though I had offered her my opinion in not inviting everyone so she could be more comfortable, but she refused out of respect. I respect her very much for doing so. ''you look mesmerizing aunty.''
Walking towards her I admire her elegant gown, when I am right behind her I lean over and place a kiss on the top of her head softly making sure not to ruin anything, she looks up at me and takes my hand, ''thank you darling, I saw the flower set up you've done for ceiling of the ceremony, it is absolutely enchanting.''
I grin at her feeling proud of myself, I had a very clear idea of what I thought would be perfect for her and Marcus, so I worked for a whole week with a carpenter and a florist for the masterpiece.
''I am glad you like it, Kat. I wanted the best for you.'' My phone beeps and I can see a text from the planner telling me it is time for my aunt to walk down the aisle. ''okay we need to take you down now, are you ready?''
She shakes her head softly and doesn't answer me. I grab both her hands in mine, a sense of worry settling in, ''okay hear me out. It is not too late if you are not sure, I will go down there and tell everyone the wedding is off and book us the next flight to Miami. And you know I am not joking.''
She pulls away from me and goes towards the mirror again and stays silent. That threw me off guard because I was not expecting it, I was waiting for a laugh and a 'of course not silly' but I got none of that. She finally turns back to me and whispers, ''Marcus is cheating on me, I found text messages on his phone last night after he went to stay over at his brother's for the night and forgot his phone at our house.''
