August 23, 1963
I stood outside the entrance of the local market with a bag full of eggs, flour and sugar. I clutched my jacket over my head as the thick heavy raindrops saturated my clothes. I was starting to regret my offer of going to the store for my mom right about now.
She sent me on this quest to get a few ingredients for some peach cobbler for desert tonight. If I had known that a storm was coming I would have stayed home.
My whole body broke out into chills as the rain penetrated my thin blue dress. I drew my arms closer to my body to try and conserve heat.
I jumped when I heard the sound of a car horn honk in the street. When I looked over I saw a familiar black car pulling up next to me. My mouth unconsciously curved up into a smile once I realized the car was Danny's.
I watched as he rolled down the passenger window and leaned across the seats to talk to me.
"What you doin' walking around in this storm for, Lorrie?". Danny asked me with concern etched on his face.
My eyes swiftly scanned his beautiful features, until my brown orbs finally met his baby blues.
"I had to run to the store for my ma, I didn't expect the heavens to pour open." I responded to him with a light chuckle.
He nodded with understanding and leaned over the the passenger side of the car to open the door for me. "Come on, I'll give you a lift home." Danny said to me.
Without thinking twice I hurriedly stepped into his car and closed the door behind me. Leaned my head back against the head rest and allowed my body to be engulfed by the warmth of the car.
When I finally looked up to to Danny, he was shimming off his lettermen jacket and before I could object his offer, he placed his outerwear over my shoulders. I immediately felt comforted by this warm piece of fabric that engulfed me in his manly scent.
"Thank you, Danny." I told him gratefully, while I snuggled deeper into his jacket.
"It's nothing. Just being a gentleman." He whispers to me.
When my eyes finally met his, I became entranced in his gentle and warm features that coated his face. Whenever he looked at me I always felt safe and welcome.
The longer I stared at him the more I noticed his crooked grin that spread across his face, and I couldn't help but smile back to him. His lips where plump with a reddish tint.
When he was finally done examining my face for any discomfort he placed the car in drive and pulled away from the curb.
"Take a right up here at the stop sign," I told Danny while subconsciously snuggling closer into his jacket.
He nodded in acknowledgment and smoothly turned onto street that led to the colored part of town.
Riding in the car with Danny was surprisingly quiet except for the radio hums of Ray Charles. I was surprised by his music choice but at the same time I wasn't. When I looked over to Danny he was tapping his fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the music while he mumbles the words.
"What do you know 'bout this song, Danny?" I asked him while slightly turning in my seat to face him.
I watched with interest as he turned to me with a boyish grin across his face, and then turned his attention back to the road. "I know more than you do," Danny said cockily.
I looked back to him with my jaw slacked in shock but quickly recovered. "what ever."
I felt my stomach become overwhelmed with butterflies at his deep but somewhat light chuckle. I gave him a gently smile in return and quickly looked down to my lap when my face began to heat up.
