I stood there, motionless, for another minute or so after Oscar left my room. A hoe? A liar? Did I really just hear Oscar call me BOTH of those things in the same sentence? I just stood there with my mouth open, staring at my door. I felt so much pain in my chest, it felt like it was on fire. Like my chest was burning, it hurt so bad. I couldn't hold in anything any longer. Once it came out, it came out like a scream. I fell to my knees and started crying, harder than I've ever cried before.
As soon as my knees hit the floor my hands immediately shot up to cover my face. I didn't want to do this, but I physically couldn't stop myself. I sat there and cried the hardest I had ever cried.
Rio rushed into my room. As soon as he saw me on the floor he threw himself to his knees as well. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into him. I threw my arms around his shoulders and pulled myself up onto his lap. He pulled me in tightly and I sat there and cried. "Riella? Mamita? What happened?"
I couldn't speak. All I could do was cry.
He didn't say anything else. He just sat there and held me as I cried. After a while my mom came into the room. "Riella? Mija? What happened? Did Oscar upset you?"
Rio looked down at me, "Did he hit you?"
I sat up when Rio said that. I didn't want my mom to think that Oscar would ever put his hands on me in that way. I looked up at the both of them and shook my head. "No." I sniffled and wiped my eyes. "We're just....Oscar and I are done."
I sniffled some more as I stood up from the Rio's lap. I could feel his eyes and my mom's eyes on me. My mom reached out and grabbed my hand. "Riella? What happened?" I looked at her. "Oscar doesn't want to be friends with me anymore mom. He's got more important things to do now. I guess the saying is right, sometimes you do outgrow your friends." I tried to give her a small smile and ended up tearing up all over again.
I didn't even have the strength in me to walk up the hallway. My legs gave out on me and my mom had to catch me. "Riella Suarez! This is not just a disagreement between friends! What happened with you and Oscar?!" I steadied myself and pulled away from her, "I don't want to talk about it! Just leave me alone!"
I marched out the front door and started heading towards the bodega at the end of the neighborhood.
Rio looked at my mom, "I'll get her. Don't worry. I'll take care of her." My mom nodded, "Thank you."
Rio ran out of my house and caught up with me. "Riella wait up!" He started walking alongside me on the sidewalk. "Where are we going?" I shrugged my shoulders, "To the store I guess." "Do you want to talk about what happened?" I shook my head. "Okay, that's cool, we don't have to." We kept walking along the sidewalk in silence. "But I'm here if you want to talk, okay?" I nodded my head.
We walked for a few more steps and then both of our heads lifted as the ice cream truck started down the street. "Want some ice cream?" I looked up at Rio and nodded. I definitely needed some ice cream. "Come on, tell me what you want?" We walked over to the ice cream truck and waited for the kids to get their ice cream first. Then we finally walked up to the window.
"Aren't you two cute?" The ice cream guy said, smiling at us. "What can I get for you?"
Rio looked over at me to make my selection first. "I'll just take a bomb pop please." The ice cream guy nodded, reached inside his cooler and handed me the bomb pop. "For you sir?" "I'll take the one that looks like spongebob." I looked over at him and laughed at his kiddy choice. He smiled at me as he paid and unwrapped his ice cream. "What? You laughing at my spongebob?" I nodded as I unwrapped my bomb pop. "You know those never come out the wrapper looking the way they're supposed to?"
He pulled the wrapper down and sure enough, his spongebob looked like someone just put the bubble gum pieces wherever they felt like. I couldn't help but to laugh out loud. Rio looked over at me and smiled. "I'm glad my ugly spongebob could make you feel a little better." I smiled at him and nodded, "Yeah, it did."
We turned back around and started walking back to my house. Rio talked to me about not feeling bad about Oscar. He said that he's grown and he should know which decisions to make by now. "He definitely made a bad decision by hurting you, but I'm here for you." I nodded and looked up at him. I was about to say thank you, but I laughed at him instead. "What?" I shook my head, "You've got ice cream on your nose." He smiled and laughed a little, "Can you get it for me?"
I nodded and wiped it off.
We sat down on my porch steps to finish eating our ice cream. I was so glad that I didn't see Oscar's red impala across the street. I couldn't stand to see him anytime soon. What he said to me was unforgiveable.
I finished my ice cream and looked over at Rio. He smiled, "This time, it's you with the ice cream on your nose." He reached over and wiped it off for me. I smiled, "Thank you." "No problem."
We sat there and kept looking at each other for a moment. I broke the eye contact before it got too intense. Rio reached out and touched my hand. "Riella, you know you're way too beautiful to be going through those types of things with Oscar."
I just sat there and listened. I didn't move my hand away, but I didn't look at him as he spoke.
"I know you and Oscar have a lot of history. And I know you thought that maybe he was the one for you, but maybe he wasn't. Maybe, um, maybe you should give me a chance."
Once he said that I looked up at him. I was trying to read his face. He seemed genuine and he had a look on his face like he was making himself vulnerable. I couldn't help it. Maybe it was the innocent look on his face, my raw emotions or both, but I smiled at him. Then I leaned in and kissed him.
I quickly pulled back and looked at his expression. He looked shocked. "I'm sorry. I just, I don't know what came over me." He smiled and then leaned in and kissed me back. Then when he stopped, we just looked at each other and smiled.
