The loud noises of the voices around her quieted as Carrie watched as Kayla's eyes landed on her. Her lips curled into a smirk before she spoke. "Carrie, truth or dare?"
Carrie rolled her eyes before squinting back at her "Dare. Give me what ya got Kay."
Kayla laughed, leaning back on her hands with raised eyebrows. "I dare you to ask out Y/N."
Snickers filled the circle around them. Carrie's face fell as she shook her head in her best friend's direction. Kayla shook her's back at her and crossed her arms.
"A dare is a dare, Care." She laughed at her own rhyme, and Carrie huffed before pushing herself up to a standing position.
Her eyes glanced around the room as she looked for them. She hadn't seen Y/N much tonight, but she knew that she was trailing behind Molina somewhere. She finally found them talking to Luke Patterson on the stairs. Carrie brushed down her skirt before walking toward the pair.
Luke's eyes landed on her first, a confused look on his face. As Carrie approached, she shooed him away. He looked at her for a bit longer before she rolled her eyes at him.
"Scram Patterson, I need to talk to Y/N."
Her eyes met theirs and stuck there, listening to Luke's feet walk up the stairs. As soon as they were alone, Carrie's lips moved upward, smiling at them. Y/N just looked at her with wide eyes before speaking.
"What's up Carrie?" They said, moving over and making a spot for her on the stairs. Carrie obliged, squeezing in next to them.
"I just wanted to see what you were doing tomorrow night?"
Y/N felt their cheeks burn at the question. They diverted their gaze to the nearby wall, stuttering as they began to respond.
"Uh, I'm not really sure..." Their eyes finally met Carrie's again with a half-smile. "Why?"
"We should hang out? Maybe catch a movie or something?" Y/N froze, staring at the girl's features as if to decode the deeper hidden meaning in the crevices. They took another moment, exhaling sharply.
"You, want to hang out with me?"
Carrie nodded, bringing her hand to touch theirs lightly. Y/N felt the heat rush through to their face, biting down on their bottom lip.
"Sure, that sounds great."
Carrie's grin grew, squeezing Y/N's hand in hers before standing again. "It's a date," She said, smiling down at them.
As she walked away Y/N shook their head in confusion, running their fingers through their hair. What just happened? Did Carrie really just say that the two of them were going on a date. They watched as Carrie moved back toward her friends, sitting down next to Kayla. They caught eyes again and Carrie shot a wink in their direction before talking to someone else in the group.
"What....the heck was that?!" Luke said, walking down the stairs with wide eyes.
"I think I have a date with Carrie?"
Luke squeezed their shoulder "This world never ceases to amaze me." he chuckled before sitting back down.
As the party wound down, Y/N found their way to the front door. As they started to turn the knob they heard a voice from beside them mention them.
"I can't believe Carrie did that." A girl they didn't know said.
Kayla smirked, "Me either.....but a dare is a dare and my girl isn't one to turn down a challenge."
Their blood began to boil. Y/N couldn't believe that Carrie thought they were this big of a joke. They fought back tears as they opened the door and walked out into the cool night air.
The next day Y/N prepared their speech with Luke in the garage. Luke rested his hands on his head, taking a deep breath.
"I can't believe that she'd stoop that low."
Y/N shook their head "I can't believe I fell for it."
Luke gave them a sympathetic smile "It's not your fault at all, okay?" Y/N nodded and Luke grabbed their shoulders, shaking them.
"You just gotta confront her, make her deal with the consequences of her actions."
They swallowed hard. Confrontation had never been their strong suit. Luke gave them one more smile before moving toward the front door. "You got this," He called out before leaving.
Y/N paced back and forth in their living room as they awaited Carrie's arrival. As soon as the doorbell rang, they sprung up to answer it. They took a deep breath before opening it. As they met her eyes, they tried not to fall apart right away.
"Hey Carrie, come in."
Carrie nodded, walking in silently. Y/N guided her to the living room where their movie night was supposed to be. As Carrie sat on the couch, an uncomfortable silence fell between them. Y/N finally turned to her and spoke.
"I know you don't want to be here."
Carrie shook her head "What? Y/N I'm the one who asked..."
They cut her off "I heard Kayla on my way out last night, I know you were...forced to hang out with me."
Carrie's face turned a ghostly color as her eyes drew toward the ceiling. There was another moment of silence before she spoke again. As she met their eyes, Y/N could tell that her look wasn't sympathetic...it was sadder.
"I'm sorry you heard that....but Y/N, I can explain..."
They left the floor open to her, eyes staying hooked onto hers as they waited for her to continue. Carrie rubbed her palms together, taking a sharp breath before starting.
"Kayla dared me because I wouldn't do it myself."
Y/N rose an eyebrow at the statement "I'm sorry, what?"
Carrie's face turned red as she moved closer to them. Her hand landed on top of theirs gently, looking at the embrace before meeting their eyes again.
"I've wanted to hang out with you for awhile...but I haven't had the guts to actually pull the trigger."
Y/N pulled back a bit, staring at her with wide eyes "You.... Carrie....you, were scared to ask me out?"
She giggled at their expression, nodded "Yes. Extremely."
Her hand rubbed soft circles on theirs as she continued to speak "I'm sorry I lied to you...but I promise you, this hang out isn't some big prank or joke. I want to be here with you."
Y/N felt their face flush as they looked into her eyes. They watched as Carrie moved to intertwine their hands with a mindful look on her face. Y/N nodded slightly at her, gripping onto her.
"I want to be here with you too."
Carrie smiled again, bringing herself closer to them. As she leaned onto their shoulder she pointed at the T.V.
"So, let's get this movie night started. What are we going to watch?"
Y/N giggled, letting their eyes fall onto the soft contact before pressing the on button.
