Conversation Over Coffee

I texted my Dad on my way out from school that I'll see him at work today. He just sent back a smiley emoji. I just sigh lightly a small smile on my face and put my headphones in and put on my playlist, basically 2004 pop and pop-rock. The sounds of Maroon 5 filled my ears. The smell of the ocean breeze caught my nose and my smile only grew wide as the café was in sight. The song started to register more clearly 'Payphone' by Maroon 5 and I became compelled to sing, and so I did lightly the lyrics poured out of my mouth.

"...-it's hard to remember
The people we used to be
It's even harder to picture
That you're not here next to me You say it's too late to make it
But is it too late to try
And in our time that you wasted
All of our bridges burned down I've wasted my nights
You turned out the lights
Now I'm paralyzed
Still stuck in that time
When we called it love
But even the sun sets in paradise I'm at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone, baby it's all wrong
Where are the plans we made for two If Happy Ever After's did exist
I would still be holding you like this
All those fairy tales are full of it
One more stupid love song, I'll be sick Oh, you turned your back on tomorrow
'Cause you forgot yesterday
I gave you my love to borrow
But you just gave it away You can't expect me to be fine
I don't expect you to care

I know I've said it before
But all of our bridges burned down I've wasted my nights
You turned out the lights
Now I'm paralyzed
Still stuck in that time
When we called it love
But even the sun sets in paradise I'm at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone, baby it's all wrong
Where are the plans we made for two? If Happy Ever After's did exist
I would still be holding you like this
All those fairy tales are full of it
One more stupid love song, I'll be sick

Now I'm at a payphone."

I finish the song about a block from The Silver Rose and I jog the rest of the way. The smell of coffee now overpowers the ocean breeze. I walk into the café and look around, all the regulars are here in total of thirteen people so for 4:30  it was busy. Mia wasn't here so I just found my favorite corner seat and set my things down and started to pull out my laptop and started to work on my chemistry project.

After about fifteen minutes I heard the door open and she walks in and immediately spots me.

'Well hello their Roxanne, fancy seeing you here. What brings you here?" she says taking a seat next to me, her words laced with innocent sarcasm.

"Well lets see... I remember their being something about a project.'' I say looking up at her from my computer.

"Yeah something like that. Also do you want a cup of coffee I'm paying."

"Sure but you aren't paying" I say as I make a phone call. "Hey I'm here you know what I want" I say nonchalantly.

"Calico I really need you to stop demanding coffee, maybe I don't know... pay this time" my Dad says sarcastically though I can already hear the whirl of the coffee machine go off.

"We both know damn well if I pay you, I'll have it back in my pocket in under 24 hours, by the way I have a classmate here with me... shit," I say putting my phone down, "What do you want?" I say looking at her is her confused state.

"Uhhh... a vanilla macchiato" her voice as confused as she looks, and I just put my phone back to my ear.

"You hear that she wants a vanilla mocchi... If it make you feel better I'll actually pay for it." I say relaxing in my seat.

"Okay I'll have your order out in a few minutes, love you Calico." He say his voice kind and gentle.

"Love you too, now get my coffee," I say in a sarcastic bratty tone and hang up.
