Perfect, it's raining. Best time for bicycling. Haha, joke to myself. It's always raining. "And that's why you're still single David," said my conscience. I told it to shove it. I strode outside and let the rain run through my hair and drip down my back. I love Oregon. I went back inside and down to our storage unit and took out the bike I found in the junkyard. I rode out of the slummy part of the city and down to the boardwalk. Screw the helmet. The river looked like it had melded with the sky, all was grey. I started pedalling quickly and let it cruise. Shit, my chain broke. It kept going, but I looked down to investigate. Suddenly, I found myself on the ground looking up at the front my bike and a girl laying motionless next to me. Oh shit. "Oh my god! Are you okay?" She didn't respond. I rolled her over. She was about the same age as me. Pretty too. Her eyes were open and she was breathing. "Uh- oww," she finally got out. "Yeah no shit," I said, "Here, why don't you sit up." I took her shoulders and squared her against the fence between her and the river. People were throwing us strange looks as they jogged past. Assholes. There was a bump on her head, I could feel it. In fact, her head was starting to look a little big. That can't be good. A jogger was approaching in tight little running tights. "Hey excuse me, can I use your phone? I think she has a concussion," I asked the lady. "Oh my god, of course by all means," she answered. She fumbled for her phone and handed it to me. "Yeah uh, hello? 911? Ok listen, I uh, sorta ran over this girl with my bike and she looks to be concussed. Yeah, her head looks fu- freaking huge now. We are on the Columbia River boardwalk. Yeah, in front of the Riverscape apartments. Ok I will do that. Thanks," I flipped the lady's phone shut. "And thank you," I said to the running tights lady. She went on her way. I went back over to the girl. I gently took her face in my hands. She was definitely younger than me. "Hey! You can't fall asleep! You have a concussion! Do not fall asleep, you understand?" If she did, she didn't take note of it because she just shut her eyes and dropped her head to the side. Oh damn, damn, damn. I heard sirens in the distance. I shook her shoulders a little bit, but not too hard. The sirens were really close now. Finally they were here. A paramedic walked up to me. "Hey kid, you're gonna need to come with us." "I didn't hit her on purpose!" I started protesting. "I was gonna come along anyway." "No, it's just we need to know what exactly happened so we can help her." Geez, scare the shit out of me why don't you.
