"Kate? You got paired with that fool?"
"This is why I hate random draws."
It was near halloween in a small city, where there happened to be a 'haunted house'. Most kids believed that it had been haunted for years. At the nearby high school, they have an annual report paper about the esteemed holiday of all hallows eve. Kajo was known as the school witch, having his own small room for spells and different 'potions' as some would call them. He didn't talk much, but when he did, it was usually negative. Kate, on the other hand, wouldn't shut her trap. On and on she would gossip,not stopping for a single gasp of breath. At school one day, after they all got their assigned partners, Kate came up to Kajo during free period, who was shuffling his deck of cards and asked,
"You wanna come over to my house and work on the report? We could work and then go to the old miller house nearby to get more information on that creepy old place."
"Sure." Kajo replied sourly, clearly exasperated at the thought of having to go to that old buffoon's house so willingly.
"Mkay," she popped her bubblegum and then continued on, "I live at 55932 pine lane, be there at 10, don't be late." and then, as a peacock would, strutted away.
"whY did I have to get her for the only project I am semi-excited about?"
"I'm not sure-" said Kajo's friend.
At Kate's house, the news was on when Kajo arrived. Kate came out of her room and sat down on the floor, gesturing for Kajo to do the same, when an amber alert came on the news. It was. One of their classmates? Alyx? No, that can't be right, they were just at school the other day- Kate and Kajo exchanged glances, then silently went back to writing down ideas for topics to write on. They were both a bit anxious, then Kate spoke up.
"Time to go to Miller Place now?"
"Yeah." Kajo spoke solemnly.
They left the house and walked over to the creepy abode known only as 'Miller Place'. When they arrived, they both knocked on the door in synchronized knocks, and when nobody answered, they let themselves in. It was dark and dreary, very spooky. Their footsteps echoed, the only sound in the motionless hallway. They branched out of the hallway and into a room. Such was cold and made them both want to run when suddenly, BOOM! The door slammed shut behind them. They looked at each other in fear, when they both felt an icy finger trail down their spines. "Shhhhhh" came a whisper from in front of them, and the door creaked open. They darted out of the room, and back to the door they initially entered from. When they arrived there, they came to a skidding halt. Something- more someone- was blocking the door. Kate took out her phone and turned on the flashlight. It was the classmate from the amber alert.
The two spoke, "Alyx? Is that you?"
The figure nodded.
"Why are you here? Were you taken?" spoke Kajo
"So many try to find the secrets of this place" the silhouette, seemingly Alyx spoke, as a shuffling noise from behind the students came to life, "Yet none come out." spoken nothing above a whisper.
And then.
The world caved in.
That was when they lost the game.
