Finally, Strider had made it home. He had of course been dead last due to Scorch leaving a while before him, and due to Sizzle just straight out cheating.
He made it to the Sandy den and knocked on the door. He heard a lot of shouting inside, but he couldn't tell who was shouting. Finally, after what seemed like ten minutes, the door opened, revealing his father.
"Your late," father said turning back towards the door.
"Or maybe they are just early," Strider said going through the door after his father.
He walked in and sat down on the floor with a wood table in front of him. His father was next to him, with his sister on his other side, and his brother on the far side of the table.
The room was awkwardly quiet for at least a minute, except for the disgruntled growls and noises coming from outside, because they lived right next to the battle training area. Which he thought was very disturbing and annoying.
There was still an empty spot next to scorch, that empty spot, was also an empty spot in father's heart. Mother used to sit there until she left one day, and never came back. He wasn't sure if she just straight out left them or she got killed or captured or anything, but that didn't matter, either way she was still gone.
Father had gotten very disgruntled ever since, probably not the humble, kind dragon that they used to know. Everyday father sat right next to the door, waiting for her to come back, and none of them, not even Scorch, had the guts to tell him she might never come back. While father was at the dinner table he would still glance at the door over and over and over.
"I want to join the battle field," Scorch said suddenly standing up and looking father in the eyes. Father opened his mouth with annoyed and angry eyes. "Before you say no, and tell me a bunch of useless reasons, I'm not asking you this time. This time I'm going wether you like it or not."
He knew dad was gonna say no, like he always did, dad never agreed to let Scorch join the Sandwing army or anything.
Father stiffened, and opened his mouth again to say 'no', but then something like a shimmer spread across his eyes and his mouth went open and close. Father fumbled over his own words as if he was trying to say 'sand' and 'snow' at the same time.
"Y- yes you can," Father said to him. Strider's eyes went wide of surprise. Father almost always said no to everything!
Scorch didn't care though, he shot out the door without saying 'oh thanks' or 'bye guys I'm leaving forever' or anything like that. He of course did not shut the door on his way out, so Strider got up and shut it for him, seeing Scorch already high in the air.
He sighed and walked back over to the table, sitting back on the cold ground. He looked at father, who looked like nothing had just happened and he was completely fine. Strider didn't know why Scorch leaving was a bad thing, it just felt off.
He glanced at Sizzle, but he was pretty sure she had just imediatly changed her expression as soon he looked at her. He could obviously tell she was trying to hide an emotion, and for some odd reason, he wanted to know. So he turned back toward the door to show he wasn't looking, but kept his head a tiny bit turned toward her.
In corner of his eye he saw Sizzle making a devious look with her talons clasped together.
He knew exactly what kind of look she was making and felt a sinking feeling in his stomach.
Sizzle what did you do.
