From up above I heard
The angels sing to me these words.
And sometimes in your eyes
I see the beauty in the world.
Oh, now I'm floating so high.
I blossom and die.
Send your storm and your lightning to strike
Me between the eyes,
Eyes
Sometimes the stars decide
To reflect in puddles in the dirt.
When I look in your eyes
I forget all about what hurts.
Oh, now I'm floating so high.
I blossom and die.
Send your storm and your lightning to strike
Me between the eyes
And cry.
Believe in miracles.
Oh hey, I'm floating up above the world now!
Oh hey, I'm floating up above the world now!
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah!
I was softly humming along with the music playing on my iPod with my in-pods on. Plastering a wide smile on my pretty little face. Lol, pretty daw? Haha. I chuckled. I'm pretty sure I look like a crazy and stupid girl right know. But know what? I don't care. I feel estatic! Talagang masaya lang ang lola niyo.
Kasi finally! As in finally, in a few minutes time, I can finally get out of this place! I can finally get to taste freedom! I've waited all my life for this opportunity. Akala ko nga hindi na dadating e. I never thought a time would come when life would be sweet enough to give me a taste of freedom.
My mind wandered to what happened a week ago.
I was in my grandmother's personal library sa mansion. I went there to bargain with her.
"So, you're telling me that if I want you to comply with my plans, I would have to comply with your demands?" My grandmother gave me a very intimidating look. I gulped, pero hindi ko pinahalata na kinakabahan ako.
My grandma is a well-known notorious and ruthless businesswoman not just around the country but also all around Asia. She's a legend. In the beginning a lot of businessmen looked down on her for being a woman, only to find themselves crawling down on her feet.
She built our company from scratch. We've never known our lolo. All we know is that he was an asshole who didn't have the balls to take responsibility as a lover or father. My grandma was thrown out of her own household when they learned that she was with child, I mean children. Since she was carrying twins then.
In order to support herself and her children, my grandma did everything she could. She took all kinds of jobs and secured a fund to start up a company. She was a prodigy in business, that her own family begged her to come back when they learnt of her huge success. She forgave them, but ever since then, she became the head of the family when her father died. Everyone in the family respected her and no one dares to cross her.
"Yes grandma," I answered firmly.
"And what made you think that I would agree to that?" she asked looking straight into my eyes I felt like she was penetrating my soul. I could feel myself shaking, but I stood my ground. I know I can do this. I was the only one after all, I was the only one brave enough to ever negotiate or stood side by side with my grandmother.
"Because I am an asset to you, and you would incur great loss if you were to lose me," she smirked, looking so amused at what she was seeing, "and I never asked you for anything. I never defied you. I did everything. I followed your every command without a question. This is all I ask."
"Alright, if that is what you want. I shall grant it. Lahat naman ng sinabi mo ay totoo. After all, I don't want to lose such a great granddaughter like you," she smiled. And for a moment I saw her eyes soften which was a rare sight. I felt relieved.
"I shall talk to your el prometido (fiance) that the wedding will be delayed. You just acquired yourself a few years of freedom la nieta (granddaughter). Don't waste it, and I'm expecting a positive outcome, but no worries, I know you won't disappoint me. You never did, all this time after all."
After I made a deal with my grandmother, I arranged all the necessary documents and proceeded with my plans. I secured a ticket to Manila and enrolled myself in one of the most prestigious law school in the country. Yes, you read that right, law school.
Alam ko namang this is just temporary, but I would do anything to salvage even just a second of freedom. All my life naging sunod-sunoran ako sa pamilya ko. Not that I'm complaining. Alam ko naman kasing it's my responsibility as a part of the family. Alam ko rin namang I am still way too blessed compared to others. I mean, there are million people out there who doesn't even have families anymore, but sometimes I just can't help but wonder how my life would be if I was born in a different family. Would I be free? Would I be happy? I know that there's no point wondering in what-ifs but... I just can't help it.
I know that I have nowhere to escape, but at least I would like a little more time before I seal my fate. Even if it means I have to take law school despite my dream being a doctor. I would gladly give up my dream for a little time and a little freedom.
"Good afternoon passengers. This is the pre-boarding announcement for flight 89B to Manila. We are now inviting those passengers with small children, and any passengers requiring special assistance, to begin boarding at this time. Please have your boarding pass and identification ready. Regular boarding will begin in approximately ten minutes time. Thank you." I fixed myself a little and stood up. After a few minutes, I found myself inside the plane. As the place took off and flew off Cebu, I was looking forward to a new start in Manila. Leaving my life behind in Cebu, I now welcome the start of a new chapter in my life.
