Irene's life was put together and arranged until World War 2 when she left home to become a nurse when the war began and all her plans crumbled. As a small child, she always helped people and animals in need. At a fairly young age, Irene decided she wanted to be a nurse so she can always help those in need. When she left her family behind to go to nursing school WW2 started, and all of her expectations changed. The author of In My Hands, Irene Gut Opdyke, uses a nature theme to explain how beautiful it is, how it can offer peace of mind, and ease the conscience of someone while being surrounded by nature and nobody else.
