When we returned to Hogwarts, I kept getting thank you's from the other people I sent gifts to that were mostly in Gryffindor house. And fortunately, no one from Slytherin made remarks to me or about recent events that had occurred.
Classes have started to decently. I was able to focus a lot more and my grades started going up, but I noticed Hagrid was a bit on edge recently and I'm pretty sure it was about Buckbeak, who I was also concerned about. The hearing was soon and him and my mother were supposed to go there for Buckbeak's defense.
One day at lunch, Harry approached me while I was eating a sandwich.
"Hi, Y/N," he said.
"Hello, Harry," I said, swallowing a piece of my sandwich.
"So, Professor Lupin wanted to know if you'd like to learn a certain charm to keep the Dementors away since they affect you in a way they similarly do me," Harry explained.
"The patronus charm?" I asked. Harry nodded.
"That spell isn't easy to learn. It's going to take time to practice and I'm not sure we're at the level to learn it," I said.
"Proffessor Lupin is a great teacher, I'm sure he can teach us in no time. And besides, the Dementors aren't going anywhere until Sirius Black is captures and Merlin knows when that will be. So, are you with me?" Harry asked. I thought about if for a second, then nodded.
"Brilliant. We'll finish lunch they Professor Lupin said to meet him in his classroom," Harry replied.
"Sounds like a plan," I said.Harry and I finished our lunches and headed upstairs towards Professor Lupin's classroom.
"Harry. Y/N. There you are. You came," Professor Lupin said from the top balcony of his office as we stepped into his classroom.
"Are you two sure about this? You know this is very advanced magic well beyond the Ordinary Wizarding Level," Lupin told us. Harry and I exchanged looks and nodded.
"We're sure," said Harry.
"Well, everything's prepared. Now, the spell I'm going to try to teach you is called the Patronus Charm. Did you ever hear of it?"
"Yes," I said. Harry shook his head.
"Well...A Patronus is a kind of positive force. For the wizard who conjures one... it works something like a shield, with the dementor feeding on it rather than him. But in order for it to work, you need to think of a memory. Not just any memory, a very happy memory, a very powerful memory," Lupin said, walking down the stairs and standing in front of his desk, facing us.
"Can you do this?" he asked. Harry and I slightly nodded.
"Yes. Very well. Harry, I want you to go first. Close your eyes. Concentrate. Explore your past. Do you have a memory?" Lupin asked as she started to pace around Harry. I stepped back a few steps to give them space.
"Allow it to fill you up. Lose yourself within it. Then speak the incantation, Expecto Patronum.
" Expecto Patronum," Harry recited.
"Very good.Shall we?" Lupin asked as he gestured to the trunk in front of him.
"Wand at the ready."
Harry took out the wand and pointed it towards the trunk. Professor Lupin unlocked the trunk and slowly opened it up, revealing a Dementor. The feeling in the room did get colder, but not as cold as what I've experienced.
"Expecto Patronum!" Harry incanted. But, it didn't work.
"Expecto... Expecto...Expect..."
Harry fainted. Professor Lupin put the Dementor back in the trunk and he and I rushed towards him.
"Here we go. Come on," Lupin and I woke Harry up and sat him up.
"Sit up. Deep breaths. It's all right. I didn't expect you to do it the first time. That would have been remarkable. Here, eat this. You'll feel better," Lupin handed Harry a piece of chocolate.
"That's one nasty dementor," Harry said, taking a bite of the chocolate before standing up.
"Oh, no, no, no. That was a boggart, Harry. A boggart. The real thing would be worse. Much, much worse. As a matter of interest, what were you thinking? Which memory did you choose?" asked Lupin as he relit the candles.
"The first time I rode a broom," Harry replied.
"That's not good enough. Not nearly good enough," said Lupin. Harry walked over to one of the candles and started fiddling with it.
"There's another. It's not... happy, exactly. Well, it is. It's the happiest I've ever felt... but it's complicated," Harry explained.
"Is it strong?" Lupin asked. Harry turned around and nodded.
"Then let's give it a try. You feel ready?" Lupin asked.
"Just do it," said Harry. I took another few steps back as Lupin unlocked the trunk and opened it, revealing the Dementor.
"Expecto Patronum!" Harry yelled. Nothing happened, but then he did it again.
"Expecto Patronum!" he yelled again. This time, a white light emitted from his wand and he drew the Demento away with the light. I smiled while Lupin laughed as Harry led the Dementor back into the trunk.
Yes!Well done, Harry. Well done!" said Lupin.
"Brilliant job, Harry," you say.
"I think I've had enough for today," said Harry.
"Yes. Sit down. Here. Eat this, it helps. It really helps. Y/N, your next," Lupin said, giving a piece of chocolate to Harry.
"Professor, will the Boggart still be a Dementor when I come face to face with it?" I asked.
"Yes, Ms. Blackbird. I placed a specific charm on it to make it stay a certain form for this specific purpose. Now as I told Harry before, close your eyes and concentrate. Explore your past and chose the happiest memory."
I closed my eyes and tried to think, but the darkness of the past covered everything up. "Professor, that's going to be difficult considering everything that's happened," I said.
"I know. That's why I said chose the happiest one you have. Let it fill you up."
I searched deeper in my mind. I found one. It was mostly sad for me, but my mind managed to make it happy.
"I'm ready," I said, opening my eyes.
"Okay, good. Now remember to concentrate. Wand at the ready," Lupin told me. I took out my wand from my pocket and pointed it towards the trunk. Lupin unlocked the trunk and the Dementor floated up before me. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, thought of the memory I chose and opened my eyes once again, looking at the Dementor.
"Expecto Patronum!" I yelled. The white light emitted from my wand.
"Yes, Y/N! Brilliant!" Lupin said. I placed the Dementor back in the trunk and Lupin locked it.
"That was remarkable, Y/N! Getting it on the first try? That's truly brilliant," Lupin said, handing me a piece of chocolate.
"Thank you, professor," I said, taking a seat next to Harry.
"That was excellent, Y/N," said Harry.
"Thanks. Harry."
"And just so you know, Harry... I think you'd have given your father a run for his money. And that... is saying something. And I mean that to both of you," Lupin said.
"I was thinking of him. And Mom. Seeing their faces. They were talking to me. Just talking. That's the memory I chose. I don't even know if it's real. But it's the best I have," said Harry.
"What were you thinking about, if I may ask, Y/N?" Professor Lupin asked.
"My family as a whole. Before my eldest siblings passed away. It was kind of like yours Harry. All of us talking to each other at the dinner table during summer. I felt the happiest when we were all together," I replied.
"Yes, I am so sorry about your brother and sister, Y/N," Lupin said.
"Thank you, professor."After Harry and I finished our chocolates, we left the classroom and headed to our next class.
