It's not right to be considered as an outsider. As different, special or free spirited. That's what everyone who lives in the small, unnoticed town that surrounds the woods I call home says. Me personally? I care very little for a high status or a big life. I am quite content with being myself. I believe we are all unique and that's what gives us all our strength. I am who I am and I like it!
I don't really have anyone I can interact with either. Well, anyone who's human at least. I've got some loyal animal companions who have stuck by me through the tough times. They were the ones who found me in the woods as an infant, abandoned and alone. Well, the lovely bunnies apparently did most of the work, but I'm grateful to them all the same.
I crouch low in the bushes as we begin a game of hide and seek. "Ready or not, here I come!" I call out gleefully. As if on cue, the three youngest racoons, as well as their mother, all let out rapid peals of laughter. I let a grin spread across my face as I exit the bushes, preparing to start the search, when a strange noise reaches our eardrums. And it's not a pleasant one. Quickly, I signal the animals to get into their hiding places, my heart beating faster than a galloping horse. I must keep them all safe. I owe them that much. They are all somewhat close to...family.
The rustling of the trees gets louder, while the breeze grows more frantic. Plus, I can almost swear I can hear thunder rumble, or is that just my imagination? Then, out from the trees jumps the source of the noise and our growing unease. It was...
A skunk.
THE END.
