The 31st of October in 1981 was remembered by the wizarding world as an incredibly joyous day. To the Potters, this was the worst day to remember. Lily Potter had grabbed her daughter from James and ran to the bedroom to save her daughter and son.
When Voldemort had aimed to kill Lily, she sacrificed herself to protect her children, but she was still holding her daughter, while her son sat crying in the crib behind her. She fell atop the baby and Voldemort assumed the child dead and aimed to kill the second, but thanks to his mother's love sacrifice, the curse did not affect the baby but left him with a lightning scar. The boy stayed crying in his crib in a completely destroyed home, his sister, lay unconscious underneath her dead mother.
Sirius Black arrived at the scene first. Frozen in shock at the site of where his friends lived, the sound of a baby crying straightened himself out, and ran to get the children. He ran past the body of his best friend with tears streaming down his face, his priority was on making sure his children were okay.
The boy was still crying and Sirius had a moment of relief before remembering the daughter. The muffled cries of a baby had him staring in horror at the deceased figure of his dear friend.
A strangled levitation spell left his lips so he can reach the girl. The daughter seemed to have only just begun crying, her dark black hair matted against her head, and blood dripping from atop her head. Sirius cast a healing spell to heal her head but she continued to cry. He held her close as he too cried along with her, he reached for her brother to hold him close and protect them from further harm.
Rubeus Hagrid watched for a moment as he let Sirius grieve. He straightened himself out and tried to dry his own tears before approaching Sirius for the children.
"Sirius," barley a whisper and a soft hand placed on his shoulder, in a somber tone Hagrid's continued, "I need to take the children. Dumbledore's orders."
Bloodshot eyes stared up at Hagrid, still holding both children, now quieting down. "Where will they go?"
Hagrid had pulled out two soft plink blankets to wrap the children. "To his aunt's. Lily's sister," he gently grabbed the first-born boy, and he slowly fell asleep in the warmth of the blanket and the large hands of the giant.
"Both of them?" Sirius explained. "She's not gonna accept both of Lily's kids, Hagrid." The second-born daughter, also finally quiet, and wrapped in a blanket.
Hagrid was easily able to hold both babies in his hands, but Sirius still held onto the girl as she began to fall asleep and not wanting to startle her.
"Let me take them!" Sirius said suddenly. "Let me take care of them! At least- at least- let me take one of them-."
Hagrid somberly shook his head. "Sirius, you know I can't do that. Please don't make this harder than it needs to be. Please." He stared at him but Sirius was only looking at the two children. "The boy will be going to their aunt's, Dumbledore wants to separate them to protect them. The girl will be going to a muggle foster home.
Any acceptable and responsible adult will be able to foster the girl." Hagrid relayed the information he knew to Sirius. He gave him a look to notice what he was implying with his last sentence.
"Take my bike," Sirius said, finally comfortable with the information. "Please. It's the least I can do. It'll make the travel much easier.
The two of them wrapped the children comfortably in the sidecar, now fully asleep. He handed Hagrid the keys and let a couple of tears fall as he said his final goodbyes to the kids. Hagrid boarded the bike and started the engine and went to take his leave.
"Oh, and Sirius," Hagrid called to him one more time, "Please don't do anything dramatic, for their sake." He motioned to the children. "You need to be able to see them in the future."
That night, Hagrid took Sirius Black's bike to Lily Potter's muggle sister to drop off the boy, Harry Potter.
Then Hagrid took the bike to the muggle orphanage Dumbledore and requested to drop off the girl, Elizabeth Potter.
And Sirius Black followed him both ways and took note of the location of each of the new babies' homes. Peter Pettigrew had escaped from the police that night and was the most wanted man in the wizarding world. For his protection, Sirius Black went into hiding as advised by Dumbledore and went to live at 12 Grimmauld Place. There Sirius was able to keep his eye on Harry and Elizabeth Potter.
