Seekers

Prologue:

An icy breeze stings my cheeks and causes a shiver to go down my spine and into my dangling legs. Gold and orange hues stain the sky as the sun takes its final peak of the day. Will anyone come? Will he, or anybody make it in time? I grip the edge of the rough concrete and feel its rough surface scrape against my callused skin. Taking a deep breath, I feel the beginning of tears falling from my eyes as a solitary street light flickers to life below.

“I’m sorry.” I whisper to the wind which whips gracefully around me. I reach back holding back the tears. I take off my hairband and feel as my hair begins to flow and whip with the wind. He always said that my hair looked better when it was down.

Chapter 1 (Two Days Earlier):

Find the Thorne’s befoRe the sky goes dark. I stand in front of my locker puzzling over the note. I have a guess who slipped it into my locker, but I really hope it wasn’t her.

“Yo, Tyler!” I look over and spot my friend Mac walking over. She’s wearing jeans, and a blue shirt with a blazer. She slides a strand of brown hair out of her face before she leans against the locker next to me with a smirk.

“Did Araceli Williams send you a love letter asking you to to the spring dance?” she teases. I hand her the folded piece of paper and her face crinkles in thought.

“So definitely not a love letter.” Nope. Far from it. Mac examines the folded paper and picks at the tape holding it down. “Aren’t you going to open it?”

“Haven’t gotten around to it.” The truth is, I’m scared of what the rest of the note says because if it’s from her, this note is a bad sign. Suddenly, Mac tears the tape and opens the note and her face goes blank.

Mac asks, “Did she show up for English today?” I shake my head.

“She wasn’t in Chemistry today either.” Mac adds. Shit.

“What’s it say?” I ask. Mac hands me the note which I quickly take from her hands. The note reads: At sundown on 3/28 the sky will go dark and the thornes Will____. I look over the note again. “and the thornes Will...” then what? Why is there a blank space?

“Today is Thursday.” I say thinking outloud. And the twenty eighthis Thorne’s birthday.

“You don’t think she means...”

“Who knows,” I say sadly, “with all the crap that’s been thrown at her recently, it’s possible. It doesn’t seem like her to kill herself though.”

“Then why the note?” Mac asks, “It’s not like a suicidal person would want to be found.” She continues to contemplate a course of action while I step out of the conversation and further examine the note.

“Hey, check this out.” I get her attention and point to the writing on the note. “The “a” in“At” is capitalized, but so is the “w” in “Will.” Mac leans over and looks at it.

“Why would she make a mistake like that?” Mac asks.

“I don’t think she would unless she wanted to.” I say. Thorne never makes grammatical or capitalization errors. I always end up giving her tips on content in her writing.

“What do you think AW stands for?” Mac asks. I turn to look across the hall and spot Araceli Williams getting books out of her locker. Mac follows my gaze and her eyes go a little wide and we look at each other.

“I guess we better ask.” I say and walk across the hall over to where Araceli is standing. She gives me a friendly smile when she spots me.

“Hey Tyler.” she says and then looks over to my left, “Hey Michelle.” I hear Mac give a sigh next to me. She’s never liked her first name. Araceli sets her books in her locker and then fully faces us.
