I swung open the door and collapsed on the bed, still tired from my morning run. Wow, running on the beach really does drain me out. Or maybe it was just from being too annoyed at that crazy kid. I smirked at myself. My eyes eventually wandered to the clock on my wall. “Shit!” I cursed. I only had twenty minutes to take a shower and get ready for school. As much as I hate to admit it, Amanda was right, I couldn’t go to school smelling like sweat. But if I took a shower I knew I would be late for the bus. Maybe I could just wear an insane amount of perfume. Nahh.
I took a record time shower of only ten minutes, blow-dried my hair, did my makeup, and got changed. Just as I was grabbing my backpack I heard the bus pull from my house. Dammit! I quickly sprinted out of my house not even bothering to lock the door.
Unfortunately, the bus showed no mercy and just kept moving down the road. I screamed out some more profanity. Suddenly I thought of a brilliant idea.
“Amanda! Can I get a ride to school? The bus left a few minutes ago but I was still getting ready.” I waited a few seconds for a reply. “Amanda?”
My conscience led me to the garage. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. What the hell was Amanda doing leaving this early for school? She doesn’t even have to catch the bus!
I thought back to the conversation my sis and I had about a year ago. It was about who got to take the car out parents had bought us, emphasis on us. But Amanda tortured, threatened, and bullied me until I gave up all privileges to the beautiful vehicle. I remember my sister saying: “The last thing I want people to see is me, the most popular person in school, stepping out of the same car as you, a lonely nerd that no one ever talks to.” Yeah, I know…Ouch. But at the time I didn’t care.
Now, on the other hand, I wish I hadn’t let her win so easily. I stepped back outside hoping that some other form of transporting would come around.
I feel like such a loser. I was standing at the corner of my street waiting for a bus that was never going to come like a total idiot. It was a clear and sunny day. The temperature was warm enough to wear shorts and flip-flops. A slight breeze blew through rustling some leaves and shaking some trees. I watched the cars pass one by one. Those lucky bastards.
After a few more minutes of waiting my prayers were answered.
A sleek black sports car pulled up on the street and stopped at the turn. I looked around confused. There were no other cars or stop signs. Why is the car stopping? To taunt me? The darkly tinted windows slid down and there in the drivers seat was the crazy dude from the beach, smirking. Oh great, this just keeps getting better and better.
“I so I bet you need my help now.” He said arrogantly, “FYI, most of the buses to the school are already at school; so I have no idea what you’re waiting for.”
There was a long and awkward pause between us. I stared at his scalped face and those deep green eyes. He looked so hot chewing on the edge of his Ray Bans.
“Get in.” He ordered.
My spirits suddenly lifted. I quickly went around the back of the car and climbed in the passenger seat.
~~*~~*~~
Most of the ride was just silence. I wanted to start a conversation more than once but just couldn’t think of anything remotely interesting to say. When he pulled into the school parking lot I quickly scurried out not being able to stand the awkwardness anymore. After saying a quick thanks I hurried to my first class.
In the middle of my fourth hour I got an urgent text from Stacy, my bestest friend in the whole world.
Wht the hell happened this morning??! And wht were u doing w/ griffin?
I stared at the text in confusion. Who’s Griffin? And why did Stace care if I miss my buss, I’ve done it before and never got a text like this form her. The loud shrill bell rang and I quickly got my shit to go meet Stacy for lunch.
As soon as I stepped into the cafeteria Stacy tackled me, literally, and started squealing in my ear.
"God! Stace chill out! What happened?" I said.
"Missy your gonna explain everything that happened this morning, don't you dare leave out one detail!" And with that she took my arm and led me to the table where Troy was calmly poking at his lunch.
Damn, Troy looked so hot with his black v-neck and kacki skinny jeans. He had a deep tan probably from running outside all the time. He had an amused expression when he saw Stacy push me onto the lunch bench and then she stared me expctantly.
"What?" I asked.
"Well!? Tell me about this morning." She urged.
"Okk...I had a long run at the beach" Troy reached over to give me a fist pound and Stacy rolled her eyes. I went and explained my little argument with my sister. Troy eventually got bored and went back to staring at his food. I could see Stacy growing more impatient."
"Then after taking a shower I-" But Stace cut me off.
"No! I mean what happened with you and Griffin Blake!"
Troy suddenly shot up from his seat looking interested in out conversation.
"Why were you with Blake?" He interrogated.
Im so confused.
"Oh come on Jen, don't pretend it never happened. Everyone saw you get out of his car this morning." Stacy added.
Throughout the whole car ride it never occured to me to ask the guy for his name. Wow, I'm dumb.
"So? I was late for my bus and he offered me a ride."
Stacy squealed in delight.
"Who's this Blake kid? And why are your freaking out so much?" I asked still confused.
Stacy was shocked.
"Jennifer! Do you live in a fucking cave or something? How can you not know Griffin Blake? H'es the gorgeous bad boy of the school. Remember? The guy that got arrested at the end of the school year last year? The cops came and everything."
Oh My God. I know who he was now. He was the person every guy wanted to be and the gerson every gril wanted to have at their side, and he had willingly given me a ride to school.
"Holy shit" was all I was able to say.
