A week had passed, and a lot had happened since the day dad had collapsed. During the night of his accident he fell into a coma. I haven't left the hospital yet, Scarlett, who was staying with a friend, had been to see him twice but she cried both times and the nurses and I decided it was too much for her. I couldn't leave though, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. What it something happened and I wasn't there? I slept on a small zed bed in his room, showered in the females block for overnighters and spent the best part of a day by his side. I held his hand, spoke to him, apparently some people in comas can hear you talking and it helps them wake up. So I tell him what's happening, the latest news from the small tv in his room, what the weathers like.
I awake with the gentle pattern of raindrops falling on the windows, and immediately looked at dad. His eyes were wide open but looked vacant. "Dad?" I whispered. "Sh darling, I'm so sorry. Don't say anything, they will only drug me again. I know I'll fall back into a coma again soon but before I do, I love you and your sister trillions, never forget it." Shocked, I took his hand and wept, watching as his eyes slowly shut and his face turned blank. "I love you Daddy." I cried. The nurses came in for his morning check up, brought me breakfast and asked if he had stirred in the night. "Er, no not at all.." I hesitated. She took no notice, thankfully and carried the breadcrumbed tray out of the room. Again, around two ish, the same nurse came in to change his sheets, carefully manoeuvring him to my bed and stripping the covers. Out of the corner of my eye I saw dads face brighten. "Hello." he said, loud and clearly. "Mr. Colby?" the nurse gasped! She ran out and came bak minutes later followed by several doctors. They asked him question after question and he replied simply, winking at me every so often. The nurse took me to a corner. "Maybe it would be a good idea to say goodbye now, he's likely to fall back asleep in a while and it might be your last chance." I nodded, staying stuck where I was as they carted my father out to have him examined.
As the clock hit eight he was finally returned to the ward, surprisingly still awake, though very drowsy. "what did I tell you Summer, completed drugged up now arent I?" I chuckled a little but my body filled with pain as I saw the medicines and drugs slowly eat away at both his personality and energy. At loss of what to do I flicked the TV on to find The X Factor. Dad and I usually took the piss out of everyone, but the atmosphere was too dull and he wasn't in the right mindset for that today. I could see he was dosing off and knew I didn't have much time. "Hey dad, I love you so much, if it's your time to leave then so be it, but I need you to hold on for me, keep trying. I won't give up on you yet." he used what he could move of his body to hug me, and was about to begin a reply when three boys came on the screen. One looked incredibly familiar. "hey, who's that one in the white tshirt dad?" I asked, bewildered by how much I recognised him, but I couldn't quite put my finger on why. "Shit." he mumbled. I stared at him, looking for clues in his body language - maybe not the best idea for a man lying in a hospital bed with no ability to move his arms or legs. "I love you billions Summer, everything will be okay." I leant over and he kissed my forehead, before falling into a heavy sleep. "DAD?!" I shook him, but got no reply. A doctor ran in, took a glance at him and wheeled the bed straight out.
Suddenly taken over by emotions and feelings I sat in the now empty space surrounding me. I put my head I my hands and let the tears run. "Summer?" I heard Lil's voice as she ran to my side. "Baby, the hospital rang us as your closest friend or relative." she crouched next to me and I rested my head on her shoulder. She stroked my hair but neither of us said a word, only the sound of the TV making sound. The three boys were still on there, singing a cover of Tears in Heaven, one of my all time favourite songs. "What the-" Lil suddenly exclaimed, attention turned to the tv. She rose from where she was next to me and switched the screen off. "What?" I asked, curiously. She avoided eye contact and just shook her head. "I recognise him Lil, where do I know him from?" I pleaded, dying to know who he was. "Nothing, summer. Nothing," she snapped. I dropped the subject but this had to be something to do with "it".
Lil and I sat for a while, mostly just saying nothing, but it was good to have her there. When it got to about eleven in the evening her mum arrived, she offered me a bed for the night but I refused, I had to stay. I was left alone. My eyes began to flicker shut until the door creaking open startled me. "Summer Rose Colby?" a new nurse I didn't recognise asked sternly. I nodded weakly, staring up at her. "I have some bad news."
