( September '96 )
Quidditch tryouts were a hot mess. Ron was lined up, ready to hear what needed to be said, while everyone else was talking and messing around.
"Alright, ahem, okay so this morning I'm going to be putting you all through a few drills just to assess your strengths." Harry said. "Uh, quiet please."
"Shut it!" Ginny yelled.
The talking and fighting immediately stopped.
"Thanks." Harry said. "Alright, now then, remember just because you made the team last year does not guarantee you a spot this year. Is that clear? Good."
"No hard feelings, Weasley, alright?" Cormac McLaggen asked Ron.
"Hard feelings?" Ron asked.
"Yeah, I'll be going out for keeper as well, nothing personal." McLaggen said.
"Really?" Ron asked. "Strapping guy like you? You've got more of a Beater's build, don't you think? Keepers need to be quick, agile."
"I like my chances." McLaggen said, catching a bug in between his thumb and pointer finger. "Say, um, think you could introduce me to your friend Granger? Wouldn't mind getting on first-name basis if you know what I mean?"
~~
"Okay, so I have made my decisions." Harry said. "Ginny Weasley, Cassandra Potter, and Katie Bell will be our chasers. Dean Thomas will be our backup chaser. Our beaters will be Jimmy Peakes and Ritchie Coote. Ron Weasley will be our keeper. Cormac McLaggen will be our backup keeper. I am the seeker. Backup seeker will be Ginny Weasley. Thank you all for trying out."
Cormac McLaggen was pissed. He bumped into Cassandra as he passed her up.
"Excuse you." Cassandra said, turning around in the direction that McLaggen was headed off in.
"What's the problem, Potter?" McLaggen asked, turning to face Cassandra.
"You." Cassandra answered. "You bumped into me, very hard in fact, and then you just continued walking like nothing happened. You had plenty of space to not bump into me."
"You're very pretty, Potter, but you're a bitch." McLaggen said.
Cassandra was fuming. There was no way she was about to let a man call her a bitch, let alone one that has no brain cells.
"What did you just call me?" Cassandra asked, taking a step closer to McLaggen.
"A bitch." McLaggen got closer to Cassandra as well.
"Cassie, it's not worth it, leave him alone." Harry said, grabbing Cassandra's arm.
"Fine." Cassandra said. "You better watch your back, McLaggen."
McLaggen scoffed and then walked off.
"Cassie, don't make any more enemies." Harry said.
"He called me a bitch, Harry!" Cassandra exclaimed. "I was not about to let a man call me a bitch."
"Oh but it is fine if a woman calls you one?" Harry asked.
"Yes because then it wouldn't be such a sexist comment." Cassandra replied. "I am so done with today. I am going to go see Jack."
~~
Cassandra found some sort of comfort in talking to Jack. He was like her therapist but also not like a therapist. He comforted her with his words and his demeanor.
"He called me a bitch!" Cassandra exclaimed.
"I know, Cassie, this is the third time you've told me." Jack chuckled. "I will talk to McGonagall to see if there is anything she can do about it. I don't have any power here but I would love to help."
"Not only did he call me a bitch but he also said that I'm very pretty." Cassandra said. "That entire conversation was so sexist. I love how women are pretty, however, they are a bitch so they're no longer pretty. I am only being called a bitch because I called him out for bumping into me when he did not need to."
"I know Cassie." Jack said. "Things like this unfortunately are going to happen all the time. A lot of people will hate on you for absolutely no reason. A lot of it will be because you are a woman and Harry Potter's twin sister. I am truly sorry this happened to you. What can I do to make your day better?"
"Tell me a story?" Cassandra suggested. "Maybe one about your Hogwarts days?"
"Well, I had originally gone to Beauxbatons." Jack said. "There, I met Brooklyn Potter. People were staring at her and she seemed nice, so I went up to her. I yelled at people around us to not stare because it was rude. They were staring because she was a redhead in a school filled with blondes. There was rarely a brunette let alone a redhead. We became friends quickly after that. We helped each other through everything."
"I really wish she would've taken me in rather than Snape." Cassandra said.
"She wouldn't have been able to take you in even if she was here." Jack said. "Voldemort wanted to kill everyone with the Potter name. Brooklyn called Lucius Malfoy a bitch back in our Hogwarts days."
"She did?" Cassandra smiled.
"She did indeed." Jack replied. "She is the toughest, bravest woman I know. I see her in a lot of you. Once you get to know her more, I bet you two are going to be so close."
"She seemed really nice and apologetic." Cassandra said. "I feel like maybe I came off a little strong when I met her. And a little mad as well. I feel awful for it. I made it seem like it was her fault she wasn't seen in fifteen years."
"She's here now and that's all that matters." Jack said. "I still haven't spoken to her. I want to write a letter but I don't know what to say. Maybe during Christmas break is when I'll be able to talk to her, have a nice conversation with her face-to-face."
"I hope you get that chance, Jack." Cassandra said.
"You know you should probably be calling me Mr. Dawson." Jack said.
"I know." Cassandra smirked. "Do I care? No."
"It is getting late Cassandra." Jack said. "You should be off to dinner. I'll escort you?"
"That would be lovely." Cassandra said.
The two exited the office and made their way to the Great Hall.
