16. The enraged Ilaria managed to overpower his brother in the duel to avenge the fallen Ennio before the Devil stood in. He congratulated Ilaria for beating her brother while pacing across the roof of the palace. Ilaria did not know the game the Devil was playing, but his menacing appearance made him a force to be reckoned with. Playing her bluff, the Devil performed the ultimate double-cross in stabbing Ilaria through the chest with the mangled claws of his right hand before laughing maniacally into the morning air.
The queen dropped to the floor in a bleeding heap as Vico looked to the Devil in both shock and surprise. The Devil finally explained his true price for his services: Vico's kingdom as a possible stepping stone for an eventual takeover of the mortal world. While a red sky shrouded the isle of Scala, The Devil then slammed his foot onto the flooring of the roof, which cracked with red lightning to drop Vico and the bodies of Ennio and Ilaria down through a single column of fire into the depths of the true inferno: Hell. Vico awoke first in the cavernous tunnels and underworlds of the new world, followed by the revived Ennio and Ilaria, who looked around contemplating their current situation. Ilaria was clouded in despair over the Devil walking the Earth, possibly throwing Scala into chaos.
