When I got home, my parents were waiting for me with downcast faces. "What's goin on guys?" I asked almost timidly. "Your sister, her trial ended today. She's on death row," my mother spoke. My sister. Who has been on trial for 13 years, and this is what it has come down to. 13 years it took them to decide whether to keep my sister alive or lock her up. Of course, they've kept her locked up this whole time anyway. I stood there wordlessly. My parents just stared at me, waiting for a reaction. I turned around and ran out the door and into the hallway. Since I was a little kid, my parents always told me to quietly shut the door so as not to disturb the other tenants. I made sure I slammed it good and hard today.

As I stood outside, it started to rain. Surprise, surprise. I ran to my nearest source of comfort. I laid down in the bed of my truck. I remember the day my dad brought it home. I had had my license for almost 5 months by that point, my dad had just gotten a promotion and brought me home a new best friend. I knew rage driving was not okay, in fact, it was an absolutely terrible idea, a dangerous, stupid idea. Again, I told my conscience to shove it. I've been keeping this in too long, I need to vent. I climbed into the driver's seat, I wasn't even sure of where I wanted to go. Five minutes later, I found myself at the scene of the unfolding. I stood in the exact spot I was in when it happened. I closed my eyes.

"David, please get somewhere safe. Just do it ok?!" I was 4 at the time. Of course I listened to her. It was the opposite end of the boardwalk, so there was nowhere to go but behind my sister. The man rounded the corner, still holding the bat. "Just stay away from us! Leave us alone! Don't touch me or David!" my sister yelled. I saw someone up on the bridge above us. They were watching. They put something up to their ear. "Sorry babe, but I've gone too long just leaving you alone, and then you think you can leave? Just walk out on me when you've left me so unsatisfied? And then you think that you're off the hook, you can go around town picking up whoever you like. I don't fucking think so!! YOU ARE MINE! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!" He walked right up to her and stared down her face. He noticed me cowering behind her. He grabbed my sleeve and yanked me away from Ella. She went into this super protective mode. "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH HIM! EVER!!" She pulled a small handgun out from her satchel. He didn't have a chance to say anything. She just stood there holding the gun, her face still with a terrified look upon it. "Hey Ella, I'm fine. We need to go," I tried to persuade her. She seemed to break out of her trance and looked down at me. "David, get behind me," she said darkly. "Why? There's nobody here Ella," I responded confusingly. But I lied, there was someone heading up the boardwalk. Once he reached us, he stopped and took in the scene. He saw what my sister was holding and put two and two together. This kid looked about 14, 15. BOOM! There was another gunshot. The kid lay next to Ella's ex-boyfriend. "Ella, what did you do?"

I kicked an empty soda can that was laying on the boardwalk. I had to leave, why I chose to go here was beyond me, I hadn't been here since the incident. I still couldn't go home though. I got back in the truck not thinking clearly. I got out at the Riverscape apartments. I went to Mari's back door. "David why are you-?" I cut her off by pressings lips to hers.

Take it in stride.
