He walked up to the rows of silver mailboxes. He was looking for a name, he knew it was there, they lived in the same building after all. His eyes landed on the name Yamazaki. A smile crept across his face, he picked up his mail that he had brought with him and shoved it into Yamazaki's box. Now all he had to do was wait.
Later that day, someone came knocking at his apartment door. He opened the door to see the tall, well-built man standing there. The man glanced down at the letters he was holding and then back up at him. "Are you Makoto Tachibana? I think some of your mail got mixed up with mine."
His voice was musical, he had never actually heard it before. He had only ever seen Yamazaki in passing. Makoto smiled with his eyes closed and took the letters that were offered to him. "Thank you for bring it to me, um?"
"Sousuke," the man introduced himself. Sousuke. Makoto smiled, the name fit him so well.
"Thank you Sousuke." Makoto kept smiling with his eyes closed, he could barely look at Sousuke in the eye. Quickly, Makoto asked, "Would you like to come in for a cup of coffee?"
"Oh no, I don't want to bother you," Sousuke said shortly.
"It's the least I can do seeing as you had to deliver my mail for that mailman," Makoto didn't want to let him leave just yet. He wanted to talk to him a little longer.
Sousuke paused before saying, "Maybe just a cup..."
"Come on in," Makoto stood back to make room for Sousuke. As Sousuke passed by, Makoto realized how tall he really was. Makoto was tall but Sousuke was taller. That would make things interesting. Makoto closed the door and went into the kitchen of the small apartment.
He returned to Sousuke in the living room, holding two cups. He offered one to Sousuke before sitting down across from him. Makoto smiled gently, "I haven't seen you around here very much, did you just move in?"
"Recently," Sousuke paused as if deciding whether or not to continue, "I'm subletting the place for a couple months."
"Ah! Well I hope you like it here," Makoto didn't look at Sousuke's face, he seemed too nervous to look him in the eye. "There's a really nice community."
Sousuke gave a halfhearted smile before taking a drink from the cup. The coffee was bitter but Sousuke drank it quickly. When he was done, he stood up to go. "Thanks for the coffee."
"Leaving already?" Makoto looked up at him.
"I don't want to take up too much of your time." Sousuke was direct. Everything he said was direct. Makoto thought he was cautious with his words, using them so sparingly.
"Oh it was no trouble," Makoto stood up, "Feel free to drop by any time!" Sousuke nodded in response. Makoto lightly brushed his hand along Sousuke's arm as he turned to leave. With the door closed behind Sousuke, Makoto could relax. He exhaled loudly, "He's perfect."
Nearly a week later, Makoto ran into Sousuke at the mailboxes. Makoto smiled, "Hey Sousuke! How are you liking it here so far?"
"It's good," Sousuke didn't say much, he just unlocked the mailbox and looked inside, "Pretty quiet."
"Yeah, it's surprisingly quiet around here, people just tend to keep to themselves I guess," Makoto said. But the comment only made Sousuke look at him with a slightly confused look. He's so special... Makoto tried to lessen the awkward silence, "Do you like it busier?"
"I like it quiet." Sousuke turned to leave, "See ya." Makoto could tell he was trying to be polite. Sousuke looked over his shoulder one last time before walking up the stairs to his apartment.
