Chapter 1: Hello

"Puckerman, I'm going to give you one more chance to give me back my teddy bear before I unleash the wrath of my Lima Heights Adjacent butt onto your face," an eight year old Santana Lopez says, crossing her arms beginning to get angry. She glares at the boy the same size as her with a full head of black curly hair and brown eyes.

"Yeah right," Noah Puckerman says almost laughing as he's still holding Santana's light blue teddy bear. Just as Santana runs up to Noah and is about to punch him square in the face, another boy named Finn Hudson, a couple of inches taller than Noah and Santana, with hair that sticks up in the front, pulls her away.

"Let go of me giganto!" Santana yells as she tries to push Finn away.

"Dude just give me the bear and walk away," Finn says calmly as he reaches his hand out for it. Noah throws it to him and angrily walks away. Finn catches it in his elbow and gives it back to Santana who is still attached to him by her wrist.

"Thanks," she says bitterly.

"Just try not to hurt people," Finn says with a smirk and lets her go.

"Santana, Noah, time out, ten minutes," the teacher sighs.

"Yeah yeah," Santana says as she fixes her long black pony tail on the way to a chair in the corner of the third grade classroom she has been to a hundred times before.

"Thanks a lot, Lopez," Noah grunts as he sits down next to her.

Just as they sit down in the small plastic chairs the teacher repeatedly presses a silver bell and gets all of the children's attention. The teacher is standing at the front of the classroom next to the cubbies with a wide eyed blonde girl. "Class, we have a new student today," the teacher says too nicely.

"I'm Brittany and I like unicorns and Cheetos," the girl happily jumps around. Santana stares at her from across the room. The other students quickly lose focus and go back to what they were doing.

Noah jumps out of his seat and sneaks off somewhere Santana couldn't care less about. She finally snaps out of her smiley daze at Brittany and goes back to playing with dolls with another student, Kurt. "What do you think of the new girl?" Santana curiously asks.

"Undecided but I like her pink top, it's definitely her color," he says, looking up from his Ken doll. "Looks like Noah has taken a liking to her," he rolls his eyes.

Santana looks up and sees Noah standing a couple of feet away from Brittany laughing and reading a notebook while Brittany stands there starting to cry and politely asking him to give it back. Santana, having had enough of Noah Puckerman, goes over to intervene.

"Noah, what are you doing?" She asks.

"Nothing," he doesn't look up from the notebook.

"He stole my diary!" Brittany accuses.

"Come on just give it back to her," she says, not wanting to get in trouble for starting another fight.

"Have you seen this? It's all about unicorns and letters to Santa; so stupid," he laughs.

Brittany just stood there. As Santana walks away thinking the argument was over, she hears Brittany start to cry and say "don't call me stupid!"

Santana turns back around and looks at the situation for a moment and contemplated helping the fragile looking girl with long blonde hair and bright blue eyes, now turning red from the crying, or just walking away as she always would if it wasn't her problem. This time she felt almost like she needed to help her, like she would regret it if she didn't.

She goes back up to Noah and warns, "give it back to her."

"Why do you care?" he looks up from the stolen journal, "you don't even know her."

"It doesn't matter if I know her or not, you shouldn't have made her cry," she growls at him. Suddenly a word she hears her grandmother use sometimes popped into her head. She was told not to say it but it seemed necessary, "you.....asshole."

Brittany and Noah's eyes widened at the sound of the bad word. Just as Noah went to raise his hand and call the teacher over, she grabbed his arm and turned it behind his back like she had seen cops do many times in her neighborhood.

"Lopez quit it that really hurts!" he squeaks out over the pain.

"You're gonna give Brittany back her journal, walk away, and pretend like none of this happened," she demanded.

"Okay, okay, fine, just let go!" Noah dropped the notebook on the floor. She lets go and smirks as he walks off, holding his arm in pain.

Santana picks the diary up and smiles as she hands it back to Brittany. "Sorry about him, he's an idiot. Are you okay?" She asks sincerely.

Brittany wipes the tears away, nods, smiles from ear to ear and hugs Santana tightly. "You're my new best friend!" she happily declared.

Santana laughs, "you don't even know my name," she points out.

"I'm Brittany S. Pierce. Now what's your name?"

"Santana Lopez," she smiles sweetly. "Kurt and I are playing with dolls over there, wanna join?"

"Sure!" She says excitedly.

They looked at each other for a little and smiled. Not a happy smile or an excited smile, but a content smile, like they knew what the other was thinking; and felt comfortable. The looked down, locked pinkies like they'd done that their whole lives and went back over to Kurt.
