❝there are no winners❞
────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──────EMERSYN HALE wasn't always afraid of the Hunger Games. Maybe it's because she knows that, if her name is ever called out during a Reaping, she would leave little behind in her District. Both her parents have been dead for years. She would leave vigorous labour involving lumber, the specialty of District Seven, and the low wages she earns for her work. But she would also leave her half-brother, Boris, and widowed stepmother, Gwen — whom she has dedicated her life to keeping from starving, and whom she can't possibly leave behind.
Having her name read out from the lips of District Seven's escort is like being struck with an axe, however it's not her name being called that makes Emersyn increasingly terrified of the Hunger Games. It's not the increased probability of her dying within weeks, being killed by someone her age or younger for fortune and survival.
What pushes her beyond her limits is when her half-brother Boris volunteers to join her in the Games. A small, half-deaf boy of fourteen, impulsive yet selfless and strategic, Boris is her life support system, the person that Emersyn would give her life for just to keep him away from harm. The fireheart with the striking blue eyes that attract both the admiration of the crowd and the murderous ideation of the tributes.
Emersyn can guarantee that Boris will become the Capitol's next puppet, another pawn in their sick game of survival — and her overwhelming desire to keep him alive has escalated. She cannot lose her brother to the Games, however the twists of the Capitol's source of entertainment make her obligations easier said than done.
