"The realm of Norian was once a place full of magic," Saskia spoke to the young children, "a place where one could yield any element, control any animal," the children marveled at their princesses words.
"But one-day Austraya saw that men were too selfish in their use of magic, instead of using it to help one another they used it to take and hurt each other. Austraya saw this and took the magic away from the people. It was on this day boys and girls."' The princess smiled at the children, "That The Prophecy was spoken 'One day the heir of Day and the heir of Night will bring together the fall of Day.' But do not fear children," she cooed seeing the looks of fear on their faces at the thought of the demise of their kingdom, " I am the heir of Day and I promise each of you that the day will never come."
Saskia made it a point to visit the orphanage a few times a month to share stories she had grown up being told before bed.
The children made no objection, loving the attention the princess had given each of them, she made it a point to sit and talk with all 12 of the children on her visits.
Telling them stories before engaging in activities ranging from painting to baking treats.
Her mother had once allowed her to bring them to the castle on the edge of the kingdom, however, they had lost one of the little girls in the maze of hallways and doors.
It had taken an entire day to find the girl in one of the libraries on the far east wing. Since then the Queen insisted that the princess simply visit the children instead.
Saskia was busy talking with Norielle, a small shy girl around the age of six when she was tapped on her shoulder.
"It is time to go back home, Your Highness," her head guard and best friend Nayok spoke.
His voice a formal contrast to the one he would speak to Saskia when they bickered and joked around the palace.
She smiled at him before hugging the children goodbye and promising to return with more stories and treats.
"What will you do Princess Saskia, when you become queen and no longer have time for things like visiting the orphanage?" Nayok asked as they rode their horses back to the place.
Truthfully Saskia dreaded the question, she had thought about it. Pondered on the thought of building a new orphanage closer to the place. However, she knew that even if she were queen her mother would never allow it.
"I do not believe that I can answer your question Nayok. What are you my dearest friend," she spoke sweetly as she watched the green leaves along the cobblestone road pass them by, "going to do when I make you the captain of the guard and you can no longer watch over me like an overbearing hawk?" She smirked at him.
A gesture that if done in the presence of the Queen would have earned Saskia an extended lecture and a lesson on how 'proper lady should behave.'
They arrived at the castle stables, pleasant smiles on their faces as they dismantled their horses and walked side by side to the Queen's library where Saskia's mother sat writing down notes from her meeting with the three lords earlier that day.
The three provinces of Day were Spring, Summer, and Dawn.
Each overlooked by their own Lord and or Lady, none of which took to a female queen giving orders very well, however, Queen Ambriel took over, ruling the land quite similar to how her husband had once done.
"How is my darling daughter," Ambriel spoke, confidence and power dripping even as she said just the mere sentence to greet her child.
"I am a wonderful mother," Saskia smiled, "I would like to ask to donate some of the palace's old blankets and linens to the orphanage. They are running low and winter is coming to the city soon."
Ambriel smiled at her, marveling at her kind heart, she made a note to herself that instead of donating the old ones she would personally see to it that new ones would be made and delivered to the children from the princess.
"Oh course dear, however, the more pressing matter is your birthday. You will be twenty and thus you shall have a grand celebration."
The Queen was not asking and Saskia knew that.
Her birthday was not something she was too fond of celebrating. Often thinking why to throw a large party when she could use all the expenses of that to help around her city.
Ambriel sometimes wishes Saskia was more like Havraya, the Lady of Summer. .
She was notorious for her selfishness and spoiled personality. Saskia was still close friends with the girl much to her mother's disagreement.
However, whenever Havraya was in the city Saskia made it a point to engage with her, even if she was hostile and spoke harsh words to her since they had known each other from a young age.
"Oh, Mother you do understand that a formal party would not be necessary," she spoke softly not wanting her mother to think she was trying to argue. Just...simply stating. Saskia had spent most of her birthdays with Nayok.
Riding horses through large fields and sharing a large piece of cake made by one of the maids. It was simple and that was how she preferred it. Simple yet meaningful.
"Darling, you know we both are aware that a formal birthday celebration is long overdue. I settled with you choosing to waste away the day on your eighteenth birthday, but you are turning twenty and that calls for a momentous celebration."
Ambriel was delicate when she spoke, however, Saskia knew that she was not asking her if she wanted a ball, she was telling her.
"Well then mother, if you wish to throw me a grand ball. I will not deny you your wishes," Saskia smiled and her mother nodded, turning back to her notes.
Signaling that she was in fact finished talking.
