"The grinning face stared at me from the darkness beyond my bedroom window. I live on the 14'th floor."
Insomnia is a silent killer, unseen and only known by those who have it. It crawls through over you leaving no room for sleep. Ignoring it is almost impossible, it leaves you tossing and turning, as I am now. I’ve been at it for hours now. No matter how hard I try I can’t seem to fall into darkness. Again I turn chills spilling down my spine from the cold breeze that seemingly came from nowhere.
I stare out the window, a figure highlighted by the moonlight standing there. Their grinning face stared at me from the darkness beyond my bedroom window. I live on the 14’th floor. I stare at the face, probably a hallucination from fatigue. But do hallucinations usually last for days. This one has, it’s been there long enough I can’t help but wonder if it’s my reflection.
The problem with this is the figure is standing up while I lay down. It could be a reflection of someone behind me but the moonlight shining outlining it makes that impossible. I’ve begun to ignore it but when I do it taps on my window. I’ve asked questions which only cause its grin to grow. That’s the only thing I can make out its grin, the rest of its face is shrouded in darkness.
I sit up looking at the figure. “ What do you want?” It was a hesitant question but I wanted to know. Of course I got no response, not even a hint that I was heard.
“Are you the reason I can no longer fall asleep?” There was no movement, but the growing of its grin, showing off relatively normal teeth. I wonder if that’s a yes.
“Why don’t you just go away?” I can feel tears rolling down my cheeks. I was scared and irritated. I wanted to be left alone, to sleep again so I could function properly. I had so many questions and no answers. My hands curled into fists and I looked down at my lap.
I hear tapping on the glass and I look up to see the figure pointing to the lock. I was shocked to say the least, that was the first movement I've seen. It wanted me to let it in, but I wasn’t gonna do that, was I? I glance between the lock and the creature. Perhaps it would leave me alone if I let it in.
I stare at the figure as I slowly and unsteadily stand up. My feet move on their own headed towards the window. I carefully watch the figure its grin grows with every step I take. I come closer and closer until I’m in front of the window. My shaky hand reaches for the lock floating slightly above it.
I look back at the creature uncertainty clear in my face. “ Will you let me sleep, if I open the window?” A small nod came from the creature, my hand immediately turned the lock. The window swung open, the creature disappeared. I look all around but I can’t see it. I don’t look much longer, my fatigue washes over me like a rainstorm.
I make my way back to my bed, dropping under the sheets. I feel cool air from the open window against my neck. Before my heavy eyelids shut, in the corner of my eye I could see a large Cheshire grin, from it came low chuckles. I fell into darkness, nightmares filling the empty void behind my eyes.
