“Where are we?” I whisper to Tenebris as we stand in a random alley. It’s kind of scary. Sawyer is with us, too.

“New York City.” Sawyer answers. I’m glad he’s not getting cocky with his special ability and gaining a know-it-all attitude. That would get old pretty fast.

“Correct, mister Hartman. Today is the day a man named Alexander White dies. He likes to go by Alex or Al. He’s 38 years old and is on a date with his wife, Krystal, right now. The date has just about ended and they’re going home to their four month old son, Alex junior.”

“Why does he have to die?” I ask her.

“I told you once before, Joey. Everything happens for a reason. Alex junior will grow up not having a father. His mother will try dating again at some point but she’ll never be truly able to get over her late husband to fully love her new husband that she’ll eventually meet. Alex will go to college and medical school to become a doctor. He wants to save people’s lives to make up for the loss of his father’s death.

While visiting his dad’s graveyard on the 25th anniversary of his father’s death, he’ll meet his future wife whose mother died from a collapsed lung just a couple years before hand. They’ll get married after three years and have four lovely children. Look further into the future and his wife dies from old age. He dies just a year later from a broken heart at the age of 92. And that’s the significant story of Alexander Timothy White Junior.”

“What would happen if Alex Senior doesn’t die?” Sawyer asks.

“Well the person who’s going to kill Al won’t get caught so he’ll go on to kill seven other people before getting caught. I think 7 lives is way more than 1 life. Al and his while, Krystal will go on to have two more kids, Christopher and Thomas. When Chris is 15, he’ll start discovering new things including drugs.

Junior won’t have the motivation of his dad’s death to become a doctor anymore so he skips out on medical school and becomes the librarian at his local public library. He’ll never meet his future wife at the graveyard so he won’t get married anytime soon. While babysitting his 15-year old brother, Chris, and his 5-year old brother, Tommy, Chris sneaks off to smoke some marijuana with his friends behind the house while Junior is sleeping.

Chris and his buddies see a cop car roll by so they drop their blunts and make a run for it. One kid drops his in the trashcan on the back porch. A fire starts in the trashcan and spreads fairly quickly. Too quickly actually. Little tommy and Junior ended up dying in the fire. After a while, Chris ended up committing suicide because the guilt was too much for him. Krystal is so overwhelmed with grief from the death of all three of her children that she goes into a deep depression and becomes an alcoholic. She dies two years later from alcohol poisoning. Ironically, Alex Senior dies in a terrible car accident on the way to his late wife’s funeral.”

“Well damn.” Sawyer says. Two completely different scenarios are both outcomes depending on if this man dies today or not.

“I’d rather have one man die than his entire f*cking family with seven other innocent people.” She says as she walks out of the alley and onto the surprising vacant sidewalk. I thought that since this is the big apple, there would be many people at every angle you turn but I guess since it’s ten at night and it’s really dark out, not many people want to take a walk.
