Tucking into the shadows of the closet, 4 year old Lizzy Thompson wrapped her small fingers tightly around her pink elephant blanket she had gotten earlier that year for her birthday. Her father loomed over her, holding a single finger up to his lips. Lizzy mimicked his finger. This was her favorite game that her and her dad had played on long trips. The quiet game.
"Stay here, Lizzy. Don't move... Remember, Daddy loves you...." He whispered, pressing his thin lips against her freshly wet hair. His breath, shaking. He encased Elizabeth into a tight hug, wrapping his arms around her. "Whatever you do... don't come out...", he said in a quick hushed whisper.
Disappearing into the shadows, the closet door shut closed. Leaning upwards, Lizzy stared through a slit in the door. Seeing what she could make out, she had seen her father's blood red stained shirt, and something else. A dark figure shaped as a woman standing in the doorway, but she was much taller than the doorway. Her body was disproportioned, arms and legs longer than her torso. Eyes hollow, and her skin was waxy. Lizzy met this woman's gaze, it was as if the woman knew immediately where Lizzy was hiding.
"Please, she's just a child! You can't have her!" Her father shouted. Disfigured nails scratched along the doorway frame, as she clawed her way through the small opening. A low moaning sound causing Lizzy to slam her hands over her ears. Covering them so that she wouldn't hear the terrifying moans.
Lizzy father shout even more, but over the moaning and covering her ears – she was unable to make out what the words were. Her heart racing, she sank back into the closet against the pile of clothes and stuffed animals. Her blanket tucked over her face; she hid behind the blanket. Closing her eyes as tight as she could, Lizzy didn't make a peep. Staying quiet like her daddy had wanted, and most of all... not letting the shadows come for her. Hours had passed, until she peeked from behind her covers. Looking up from behind the safety of them, it was as if nothing happened. In that swift moment, the door was ripped away from it's hinges. Darkness, waiting on the other side.
