Survival in The Rural South; a Starting Guide

- that presence you feel running alongside your car at night is real. They are runalongs, do not go looking for them.

- if street lamps start to go out, RUN. do NOT go home, go to where people are. Do not be alone under any circumstances.

- if you feel drawn to a body of water for no apparent reason, you need to flee. There is a water spirit that wants you.

- beware of the Not Deer.

- chupacabras are real. And they are smart.

- Under no circumstances are you to go into corn at night.

- Stay out of orchards when in the dark. There are creatures who live there.

- silver kills skinwalkers. Beware of them, they are tricky.

- if your lights begin to flicker and there is a sudden drop in temperature, you have a ghost. Arm yourself. If the lights begin to flicker, but no temperature change, you may have a different spirit.

- those footsteps are real. Do not turn around.

- old cemeteries are dangerous. Newer gravestones are not. Do not disrespect an old grave.

- under no circumstances are you to pick up or try to help a woman clothed in white. You will surely die.

- mountain lions do not roar, they scream.

- If you are passing through a small rural town, do not accept the invitation into someone's home. You will forget who you are, and you can never leave.

- if the cicadas suddenly go silent, you are in immediate danger.

- never get trapped in the dessert at night.

- refrain from entering a fairy circle

- patches of dead crops or grass that appear to have a pattern are usually made by an outside force.

- never go into a circle of burnt grass.

- under no circumstances are you to do "bloody Mary". It can have dire consequences.

- cats have been known to have connections to the underworld. Watch your cat. They can see and sense things your human eyes cannot perceive.

- do not go searching for "the cabin" in the woods that everyone seems to know about. If you didn't find it when you first went looking, never look again. Those who find it are changed by what lives inside.

- that old trail you found is dangerous, but you will have many adventures there.  Arm yourself and bring a partner to explore with.

- if your hiking partner begins to act strangely after meeting someone along the path, beware of them. They may not be the same person you began your journey with.

- if your partner claims that they saw something moving in the woods believe them. Ask them to describe it, leave immediately.
