“State your name.”

The eyes of the android opened like the shutters of a camera lens. They moved slowly and curiously around the room, processing her surroundings. However, the room was a dark abyss, save for the overhead lights that were on only in her area. The voice had come from somewhere to her left. There was a twitch of fingers and the android girl’s head turned to look at the arm she only now realized she had. Her almost life-like eyes trailed down to the hand and she twitched her fingers again, a small smile forming on her lips.

“State your name.”

The voice was more stern this time. Heels clacked, echoing as they moved from the left to somewhere by the android’s right. Her smile fell and she now focused on trying to follow the voice.

“... My name is Proto S.I.D. Unit-01.”

There was the sound of a pen moving across paper. The heels clacked again but remained where they were. “Vocational capabilities confirmed. Audio box and neck joints seem to be working. Cervical and optical animation also confirmed. Continue with construction.”

Somewhere in the room a button was pressed. Gears moved and the assembly machines surrounding the girl came to life. Those with claws moved out of her range of sight and came back with something new each time. Additional parts and pieces that belonged to her. She was but a head and torso with arms and hands--shining chrome all around. The other machines were modeled like guns without triggers and served to only mold the pieces onto her with their hot lasers.

At first, she didn’t think to look down, but she began to notice that each time these machines worked on her, she started to feel more...complete. Her electrical circuits were being connected elsewhere while there were even more being established at the same time. When she finally looked down, there were now the thighs of either leg and the beginning of a knee. At her hips, she noticed something that looked like a large claw holding her firmly above the ground.

“Can you move your arms?”

The voice had moved again. She could no longer hear the clack of heels over the clicks of her own body being created and the robotic sound of the assembly machines. Still, she followed it while answering its questions and doing as told.

She bent her arms and stretched them out before bringing them close once again and watched with fascination as her fingers move more fluidly than the mere twitches she’d done before.

“Upper body movement confirmed. Motions are smooth and precise; no hesitation or falters.”

“What is your purpose?”

The android blinked and looked farther into the abyss of the room. This one was much deeper and held different qualities. However, it didn’t sound as serious or stern as the one before. Nevertheless, she answered no differently.

“My purpose is to imitate the nature and niche of native peoples as closely as possible. I will adapt as need be but not reveal my scientific origins. Though I am meant to imitate, my true intentions regard surpassing the native race, and for that I’ve been made to be faster, stronger, smarter, and capable of retaining any amount of knowledge. I am not by any means intended to resemble a native in any manner of appearance.”
