That afternoon, outside the castle, the students, Gryffindor and Slytherin, are lined up in two rows with brooms by their sides.
The flying teacher, Madam Hooch, came down the line. She had short-silver hair and hawk yellow eyes.
"Good afternoon, class." She spoke firmly.
"Good afternoon, Madam Hooch." The class replied in a chant.
"Good afternoon, everyone, good afternoon. Welcome to your first flying lesson. Well, what are you waiting for? Everyone steps up to the left side of their broomstick. Come on now, hurry up. Stick your right hand over the broom and say, up!" Madam Hooch explained.
The whole class chanted the words "Up!" with Harry and Rose being the first students with brooms in their hands.
Not too long after a few more 'ups', a few other students, including Draco and Dean had managed to pick up theirs as well.
Hermione's barely left up off the ground while Ron's finally picked up off the ground, whacking him in the face, causing Harry and Rose to laugh beside him.
"Ooh!" he cried in pain. "Shut up you two!" he said before laughing at himself as well.
"Now, once you've got hold of your broom, I want you to mount it. And grip it tight, you don't want to be sliding off the end." Madam Hooch said, pausing while the class mounted their brooms. "When I blow my whistle, I want each of you to kick off from the ground, hard. Keep your broom steady, hover for a moment, and then lean forward slightly and touch back down. On my whistle...3...2..."
She blows the whistle. However, Neville's broomstick somehow lifted him off the ground. Neville immediately took off. He looked quite frightened.
"Mr. Longbottom..." Madam Hooch mumbles.
"Neville, what are you doing?" someone said.
"Neville...Neville..." a few students called out.
"M-M-Mr. Longbottom! Mr. Longbottom!" Madam Hooch said shouting after him.
"AHHHH!! HELP!!!" Neville cries out as his broom skyrockets towards the sky.
"Come back down this instant!" Hooch is called cross and firm.
Neville flies uncontrollably in the air and hits a wall, conking along it and then swooping off. All the while, he is screaming. He begins to zoom back towards the group of students. Hooch quickly holds out her wand to stop him.
"Mr.Longbottom! Stop that broom now!" Madam Hooch shouted. Neville zoomed directly at Madam Hooch causing her to jump out of the way and for the students to back up to not get hit.
Neville then zoomed past a statue of a man with a sharp spear, high up on the building. Neville's cloak caught on to it. He has then flipped off the broom and hangs there just by the thread of his cloak.
Everyone watched in horror as the poor boy hung for a moment from the statue before the cloak ripped through the spear, sending Neville falling fast to the surface of the ground. Luckily, his cloak caught on a torch, making Neville's descend to the ground much less life-threatening.
"Everyone out of the way!" Madam Hooch shouted as she ran through the group of kids to help Neville up.
As she tried helping him up, he winced at the slight movement of his wrist.
"Owowowow," Neville muttered.
"Oh, oh, oh, oh dear. It's a broken wrist. Tch, tch, tch. Good boy, come on now, up you get.' she spoke as she helped him up. "Everyone's to keep their feet firmly on the ground while I take Mr. Longbottom to the hospital wing. Understand? If I see a single broom in the air, the one riding it will find themselves out of Hogwarts before they can say, Quidditch." she said as she helped Neville back up to the school and into the hospital wing.
