I held onto Mari. I felt a sort of strength flow from her to me. I stared down this kid from her past. I had no idea who he was, what kind of person he is. I knew the instant he headed towards Mari and she tensed and cringed away from him. Pieces of her past suddenly came together in front of me and I was filled with rage. I sat her down on the chair and stood directly in front of her. "You better move out of the way kid," threatened this Jake. Mari's breathing hitched behind me. I was at least 2 years older than this kid and 3 inches taller. But he seemed to be doing well against me, he wasn't backing down. "What the hell is wrong with you? Why would you hurt her? You claim you care, but you want to keep hurting her!? Fuck off man! Get the hell out of here!" I screamed at him. I saw Mari reach out with her elbow. This kid pulled out a knife. "Hey man, don't do anything stupid," I warned him. "Mari, please. Say you love me," Jake begged. Mari had tears in her eyes. "No," she choked out. Jake just smiled. "Ok then, well, now I know." I was guarded against him. I didn't know what he was going to do. Suddenly he flipped the knife around and buried it in his stomach. Mari started screaming. He fell to the ground. A nurse walked in and covered her mouth with her hand. "Oh my god, what you?" I looked up at the nurse in alarm, "No! It wasn't me! I didn't do anything!" I said frantically. She ran over to Mari. "Are you okay?" The nurse wailed. "Yes, yes! I'm fine! He didn't do anything! He did that to himself!" The nurse stared hard at me and the awful scene around us. " still calling the police." "Wait!!" Mari yelled. "It's fine, they'll figure out soon enough it wasn't me," I reassured her.

At the police station, me, my family and Mari and her family were all sitting together. "You can't stay out of trouble can you darling girl," her mother softly spoke. "Thank you again for protecting our little girl." Her mother said to me. "Mom, I'm 15." Mari managed to convince everyone including my parents I didn't do anything. An officer walked into the room. "Well it all checked out, the forensic analyst has confirmed that the position of the knife and the body's hands was self-inflicted. Alright, you just need to sign here. Your biological fathers signature won't be required since he is deceased. Your biological mothers signature has already been acquired," the officer finished calmly. My parents were looking at each other with worried faces. "Wait what? My father is deceased? He's sitting right here! What are you-" My eyes fall down to my biological mother's signature.
