Eliza pulled on her new turquoise hoodie over top of her favorite lavender t-shirt. Apparently this tiny town was safe enough for her to walk the mile to school, and she could take her time, since classes began at nearly 8:30. She never would have gotten away with either of those things back home, because her town wasn't crime-ridden, but it wasn't exactly Mayberry, unlike this place. Her dad yelled at her to come eat cereal, but she grabbed a Poptart and left, throwing her hood up against the chilly October air. When she was about halfway there, she noticed a girl her age rushing toward her. She hated meeting new people, but this kid seemed set on talking to her. Eliza picked up her pace, but to no avail.
"Hey!" The girl called. Eliza ignored her. "Can you hear me?"
"Nope."
"Oh, yay! You can! I'm Jane." She stopped and stuck her hand out.
Eliza kept walking.
"Ooh, you're grumpy. I've dealt with worse, though."
Eliza snorted.
"Uh huh. I doubt that," she said. She could see the girl's hurt face, even as she turned away.
