As Sam dropped his bag on the floor and took off his jacket. He heard shouting from the living room, the voice rang out through the house. As he hung up his jacket Sam realised it was his mothers dulcet tones. She shouted a lot, mainly at Sam but when he wasn't at home it could have been anyone. Sam didn't really care who it was being shouted at, so long as it wasn't him. Sometimes he thought he was a bad brother for not caring but it was never meant like that. Sam was tired of always being the one who had done wrong. Being oldest of the five siblings that lived in his house, he grew tired of having to be the one to do everything.

Sam had three brothers and two sisters. His father was a bartender in the pub in town while his mother spent all her time tending to her children. Sam never really cared much for his siblings; he only ever got on with his eldest brother, John. Sam hated living at home with his mum just as much as John did and for many years wondered why he didn't leave with his brother but whenever he thought back he would begin to remember the reason he stayed, Lucy.

What would she have done with herself over the years without her best friend. It was never worth pondering as he knew he couldn't go and live with John anymore as he was living with his girlfriend somewhere near London. He couldn't just go and announce his arrival at their house like that, although sometimes he wished he could.

John was four years older than Sam and he used to be in Sam's position but he left home when he turned sixteen. After John left Sam was on his own, no one to talk to in the house and he became the eldest. Sam never realised what that meant, he knew that John had to do a lot of work around the house and that he got shouted at a lot but the emotional side never occurred to Sam.

It annoyed Sam that he was now tho oldest, it became Sam's fault no matter what had happened. Sam got shouted at a lot, but he had reached the stage where he no longer cared. This was life now and he had to deal with it. Over the past two years he grew used to his mothers temper and her sudden out bursts. He felt so alone, except for Lucy. She was such a good friend, and had been for many years, but when John left she was there for him like no one else.

She was there the day he left. John had an argument with his mum, it was horrible and scary for sam and his other four siblings. At eleven, losing a brother was terrifying. John had always looked out for Sam, a bit more than he did for his other siblings. But from his room Sam could hear the entire argument. John shouted about his mum being a terrible mother to all of her children. She told him to leave and at that John stomped up the stairs and into the room he shared with Sam. Sam was sat on his bed, tears rolled down his cheek as John packed up his stuff.

For a while Sam knew John was unhappy due to their regular heart-to-hearts. Sam hysterically begged for John to stay, but as he did he knew John couldn't. When John had packed his bags he hugged his younger brother and warned him that life was gonna get harder from now on. John gave Sam some advice that drifted in to Sam's mind from time to time: "Don't forget where you come from." Sam never really understood what this meant but he kept it in mind.

After saying this John wiped Sam's tears and left the room. Sam knew what was happening, John was leaving. All of a sudden Sam had a surge of emotion, he followed his bother with tears flowing out of his eyes. John couldn't leave him. Even years after the emotions still felt so real in Sam's mind.

He ran out of the house to see John putting his bags into a taxi. Sam screamed at John to take him to London. John told the driver he'd be a minute. Sam's siblings were now stood in the doorway and many neighbours had came out to seethe source of the commotion. Lucy was one them, she ran to Sam to see if he was okay but Sam was too busy tyring to hold on to his brother.
