This story starts as any other. There is a dramatic turn in the main character's life, a no return point. However, differently than many of all those stories, our protagonist always knew this was going to happen.
Micaela, since the tender age of 7, when she was informed of the plans the family had made for the future. In the looks for a better education for our main character they would move to another country. A new home. Canada.
Though all those years of sweet waiting until the moment of departure would come, she knew how she was supposed to behave. She knew that friends were ropes tying her back, so did what thought it was best. Heart now covered with ice to stop herself from getting attached, because always in the back of her mind lurked the knowledge that she would loose everything, no matter what she did.
Because her family didn't own any properies, they hat to rent. Always moving from house to house, different neighbourhoods and different schools, there wasn't really a please to call home. As the date for the trip to Canada was delayed, year after year, she believed that maybe it would not happen. Moreover, after so much time, they spent more than one or two years on the same house. Micaela took the resolution to open up more, to get to know the people that surrounded her life. And just like that the walls of ice started to fall.
Yet, even if you always knew, the separation does not hurt any less. When the trip became a reality, our protagonist was filled with sorrow, was truly lost, forcibly pulled out from the those who she became attached to. All that was known was left behind. The only constant was Mother, she was moving to Canada as well. Trying to be positive and make the better our of this, they both squashed the feeling of fear and desolation into the darkest alley of their hearts. Nobody would see their resolution falter. Nobody would see them other but smiling.
Now in the new country they filled with wonder, amazement, adventure. The first month of adaptation was a success. They visited many beautiful places and met new people close to where they lived. But as good as it was, such relaxation had to meet an end.
Our protagonist was enrolled into a new high school the very second month of theif arrival. At first, trying to make her way through the semester was a challenge. Everyone seemed so different, the language was complicated, the teachers even were weird, and the school system appeared to be a mess. Despite all the things that were against her, Micaela was determined. Heart made of ice again.
The cold and serious resting face she was quite proud of being able to pull off (despite that inside she had become a big softie), made everyone step away from her. Not paying attention to all the rather nasty things being said about her personality, she focused on learning the language and shutting her acquaintances to a minimum.
In art class she met a rather silly boy, with a latino background as well. Though it didn't really count as a friend. Julián only started talking to her because she was the only one on the art class that spoke Spanish. Of course our main character, despite cracking jokes with him here and there, didn't really allowed him to get closer. After some days into talking to him, Julian slipped that he had a girlfriend named Noelia. He talked about the girl as talking about a filling chapter in a book. Really a shame if you asked our protagonist, the girl was absolutely beautiful and he was an idiot to her. However, Micah (that is how our main character started to jokingly call herself in her mind) did not put her nose into other people's matters, specifically if it was a couple, so she said nothing.
Funnily, looked like Noelia had taken the oddity of staring weirdly at Micah when they walked past each other. Unable to really tell why the beautiful girl with a head full of cascading curls looked at her like she wanted to rip her throat, Micah just kept a cold stare and walked with all her (false) confidence. She would not show how only one look from Noelia made her stomach turn and her mind a mess.
