Chapter 2.4: Too Broken For Repair
-Alternate ending to chapter 290 of bnha.(This is an alternate ending of the war arc which begins right after the reveal that Dabi is Touya Todoroki.)XxxxxxxxxX
After a couple of minutes of trying to calm Shouto down and waking him up, after all the worried glances and comments that the other students were giving, and the pile of nurses that had come in to handle the situation, they pulled him out of the nightmare that he had to endure and was now seated up on his bed.
The Shouto on the bed was far from the usual cold, stoic teenager that they had all known.
No, this was a child who was panicking, tears falling onto his lap, shaking, heavy breathing, out of control. This was the child who was in so much pain after every training and had to be put to sleep just to calm him down. This was the child that was burned with boiling water and had to witness his mother taken away at just 5 years old.
This was the teen that was close to his breaking point, no, past his breaking point.
He was currently being hugged by his two siblings, his shaking hand being held by his teacher, two nurses checking his vitals, and three curtains that had been put around his bed to give some much needed privacy.
Though he was still trembling, he had calmed down tremendously. And after a while, he felt safe enough with falling asleep again, while Fuyumi and Natsuo didn't stop playing with his hair to calm him down.
All the while this was happening, Aizawa had begun to realize just how broken Shoto had become after the war. His usual cold glare was exchanged with tired, red, puffy eyes. His usual organized and clean frame was now a lifeless body, barely holding on to whatever part was still clean.
He had begun to wonder just how long Shouto had to keep this up, just how long he was pretending to be this cold, shy self, just to prevent getting questioned about his life at home, Endeavor, his past, anything.
As the two siblings and the teacher looked sadly yet calmly at the sleeping Shouto, the number of questions that filled Aizawa's mind was filling up his train of thought, to the point that he was thinking of nothing else but possible answers to them. As though the siblings were watching him, they seemed to solemnly think of answers to his questions. though to cut them the worry of which one to answer, he decided to begin the asking himself.
"Do the nightmares happen often?" He decided to start lightly.
..........."Yes" Natsuo answered this question. Aizawa went wide-eyed even if he knew the answer.
"But they seemed to have calmed down after he got into UA. It's been quite a while since one this severe has happened."
"What are they about?" It pained to ask him, but he knew that if he wanted to help him recover, he needed to ask him as many questions that could help him in the future.
It took them a while to answer, but they knew the answer, what was difficult was the idea of revealing these secrets to anyone else, since it seemed that these were secrets that they would be able to hide forever, and they had accepted that for a long time, until now.
Now it was Fuyumi answering the question. "The abuse, mostly. The past comes to haunt him. sometimes it would even twist the truth, making scenarios in his brain, us leaving him, the abuse continuing until now, our mother beating him. Every night they would get worse, a worse scenario, a more painful training, more hurtful words than before. H- he was g- getting better" A this point, Fuyumi's eyes had began to water, tears slowly taking over her cheeks.
"Sorry"
Aizawa quietly murmured, understanding the pain they must have had to endure all these years from seeing their younger brother constantly get trained just for a selfish dream from a vicious man who would do anything to accomplish his dream, even if it meant pulling your own children into the process.
As Natsuo was rubbing his sister's back until she calmed down, Aizawa continued with slightly tougher questions.
"How often would he train Shouto?"
Natsuo looked down on his lap, a saddened expression growing on his face.
"As often as he could lay his hands on him. He had become impatient. The moment his quirk manifested in both sides he made sure that nothing would go wrong with his 'creation'. After so many failed attempts, the moment he got what he wanted, he never let go of it. He didn't let a single distraction get to Shouto, even us, even whatever weakness he had. He would make sure those weaknesses were removed from his life, even if it meant not letting him play with us, or longer trainings that would go on until the next morning."
Now it was Natsuo's turn, His anger was slowly building up, until he practically shouted the last sentence.
And now he knew, this was the reason Shouto was so strong. He was at the level of pro heroes.
After a couple of moments of silence, Shouto began waking up. At first, he seemed to be confused, not knowing where he was. He looked around, first Fuyumi, next Natsuo, last Aizawa. Relaxing his head back on the pillow, as silent tears began flowing down his face with a pained expression. All they could do was stay silent.
<Shouto's pov>
Many thoughts began overwhelming me as I slowly try to remember how I ended up here.
War
Fighting
Dabi
Touya
Flames
Brodcast
More flames
Screaming
Ash
Smoke
Nothing
Before I knew it, a hot stream of tears began rolling down my face.
My mind kept screaming out words with no control. No way to stop them.
Your fault
Stop crying
Weak
It should've been you
Which side are you on
Horrible
Just give up
-
I felt a hand rubbing on my shoulder, finally making my thoughts slowly fade away. When I look up to who's hand it belonged, I realized that their faces were looks of worry and sadness....
Stop making them worry about you
"Hey, I need you to breathe. It's okay."
As he said that, I noticed just how fast my breathing was, to the point that one of the machines next to me had begun beeping. As I try to slow down my breathing, I wipe away the tears that had stayed on my face.
"How are you feeling?" Aizawa asks me as he seems to be checking out the monitors next to my bed.
With my monotone voice, I mutter out an "I'm fine" to avoid further questions.
He looks back down and stays silent for a couple of minutes just eyeing me up and down, while Yumi and Natsuo stayed silent. All in all, it was a silence that wasn't exactly awkward, but I didn't want it to last any longer.
