Chapter five

Zainab watched as Mufeeda walked away from the house towards the school. When she arrived at their home a few months ago, she had admired the young lady in hijab. Now she was beginning to find her irritating. There was something about her she didn't like these days....yes....since she started getting close to the handsome pilot, she had begun to get on Zainab's nerves.
She wondered what it was about Mufeeda that made most of the young men in Taruwa want to get to know her. They would try to be nice to her only to tell her they wanted Mufeeda's number or her help with getting her attention.
Mama and her friends in the Mothers' Circle would refer to her as a shining example for other girls to emulate. The other day, when her mother was complaining about her dressing, Mufeeda was the yardstick. Mama had said with admiration "Just look at Mufeeda and how she dresses modestly, try and be like her." Now she had managed to have the pilot wrapped around her fingers. The same Captain Al-Mustafa whose attention she had been seeking long before Mufeeda's arrival in the town.

Captain, the cutest man that ever appeared in Taruwa.

She couldn't discern why the pilot would be interested in a girl like Mufeeda. Zainab thought she knew the pilot's taste in women. She knew that his female companions were usually classy and fashionable, not drabs like Mufeeda. The truth was she had always wished him to notice her and the shopping with Mufeeda was an opportunity to make him. He hadn't even looked at her twice despite the pretty long dress she wore with her veil over her shoulders to show off her big round earrings and long neck. Instead, he had eyes only for Mufeeda. Zainab was aware of the phone calls and texting the two were exchanging and was almost convinced they were having a relationship and were meeting secretly. Every night, for the past four days or more, Mufeeda would take a stroll after Maghrib and come in just in time for Ishai. She would hear her talking with him at night before sleeping, first thing in the morning before and after morning prayers. Who was she seeing and where? It couldn't be the pilot because she had heard he flew the President's family abroad. Or was that a lie so that he and Mufeeda could meet secretly? The possibility of this assumption being true began to thrive in her mind.
"I need to know what's going on' she decided quietly."

Mufeeda walked over to Baba Kassim's house after school. She had received a text from Mama Jami asking her to come if she could after the Friday prayers. She had also planned to see the older lady. The children had told her that their father was returning from Europe during the weekend.
Mufeeda had never met Baba Kassim before and she was thinking it would be better if she reduced going over now that the man of the house would be around.
She expressed this to Mama Jami, and they both agreed that she was right.
"I'll let you know when it's okay to come over. but I'm sure Baba Kassim would like to meet you, the kids have been telling him a lot about you already."
She was about to leave when Mama Jamila asked her to sit with her in the living room.
"Mufeeda is it okay if I talk to you about you and Mustafa?"
She felt a rush of blood to her cheeks at the mention of his name.
"It is," she said.
"You know how fond of you I am Mufeeda. You also know I consider Mustafa to be a younger brother. I know he loves you very dearly, not because he told me but because I see it in his eyes and in everything that has to do with you. I know the feeling is probably mutual. I think both of you at this point need to talk more about yourselves without holding anything back. This is the best way to build a good relationship. Our loved ones deserve to know everything. Tell him your regrets, your pain, your fears and let him tell you all of his. I want you to know I'm right behind you and whatever happens I trust you to keep your trust in Allah."
Mufeeda hugged Mama Jami tightly. She wished her birth mother could have been this caring.
