Background Knowledge

You've been researching dragons for as long as you can remember. You've longed to meet one for real, but never got the chance. Today, however, it seems that your wish will somewhat come true.

Your POV

Another day with no new discoveries. . . I sigh to myself as I sit atop a huge boulder on the mountain I call home. I have been searching for dragons for years even though they have been long extinct. I have a small sliver of hope that they still exist somewhere, but with how my days have been going, that hope is disappearing. I stand up on the boulder and look out over the horizon. The sun is setting. I should get going. I turn and hop off the boulder, walking off without a single glance back.

"Killer you idiot! You could have gotten us killed with that little stunt you pulled!"

"Come on boss! I did that for good reason!"

"I'm with Killer on this. Things could have turned out a lot worse. . ."

I freeze in my spot as I hear the unfamiliar voices. They are coming from a cave near by. I change course and head for that cave instead, curiosity taking over. I peak into the cave and my eyes widen in shock. Dragons! Well, sort of dragons. There are six of them in all. Skeletons with enormous skeletal wings and fangs that could only belong to dragons. The black goopy one, their leader perhaps, is berating a smaller one while another tries to help out the situation. The other three are lying on the ground, unconscious. I spot injuries on every single one of them, some worse than others. The leader speaks again with a concerned tone instead of a threatening one. "We have to find a way to heal these three or else their not going to make it." Everything goes silent and the little one, Killer I think his name was, looks away with a shamed expression.

I glance at the backpack on my back and realize that I have all of the supplies needed to heal them, including my own healer's magic. I grip the straps of my backpack tightly and nod, determined. This could be my only opportunity to communicate with a dragon species. I think it's worth the risk. I step into the cave and wave, speaking as confidently as I can. "I can help heal your friends if you'd like!" Three skeletal heads snap to face me, eyelights fierce and fixated. The leader growls and bares his fangs. "Who are you and what do you want?!"

His voice is booming and commanding, a shiver sent up my spine from his presence. I continue walking forward to them and I reiterated my point. "I want to help your friends. They need serious medical help and I can give them that!" I pat my chest and smile confidently. "I have healing magic and I could make your friend good as new in no time!" Killer exchanges a look with the other skeleton present and nods. He then looks at his boss and speaks. "I say we let her, boss. We don't have much option here and she looks trust worthy enough." The goopy leader considers this for a second before nodding. He looks at me coldly and gestures to his injured friends. "Do what you must. However, if you do anything to harm them I won't hesitate to kill you." To emphasize his point, he bares his claws at me and his menacingly sharp teeth. I gulp heavily and nod. "Yes sir."

Time skip

"Alright! Good as new!"

I finish healing up Error and sit back on the cold stone floor of the cave. Nightmare observes my work and seems satisfied. "Nice work, for a human." I ignore his insult and instead stand up. "I should get going now. It was a pleasure meeting you all!" Cross and Horror had woken up after I healed them and now they look at me disappointed. "Do you have to go? We haven't gotten to speak too much at all!" I smile at them, but I still gather my stuff up. "I need to get home. My family is waiting back at the village. I don't want to worry them."

I start to make my way to the exit, but a purple boned wing blocks the way. I look to its owner and see Dust leaning against the wall. "I don't think so. If you haven't noticed, it's pitch black out there. I'm sure dying isn't on the top of your to-do-list, so I recommend staying here with us." I look outside the cave and see that Dust is correct about how dark it is. Killer grabs my arm and pulls me back to ground, hugging me. "Yeah! Stay with us! We haven't gotten to thank you properly for healing Cross, Horror, and Error." Killer nuzzles closer to me and a blush steadily makes its way to my face. Nightmare groans and sits down next to me. "I guess I can say thank you. It wasn't an easy feat, I'll give you that." He kisses my hand in a gentlemanly fashion and leaves it at that, ignoring the fact that he just kissed me. I feel flustered at this, but I try to push away my embarrassment.

Dust tends to the fire, but he throws glances my way every now and then. Cross struggles to sit up with his injuries, but somehow manages it and leans in my direction. "What was a girl like you doing on this part of the mountains anyway? I know for a fact this side isn't inhabited by humans."

I smile at him and explain happily. "I was actually looking for dragons!" Horror looks at me shocked and sits up quickly, wincing in pain. "Looking for dragons?! Who in their right mind would do that?!" I stick my tongue out playfully and point to myself. "I would!" Killer, who has his head rested on my shoulder, pipes in. "I guess you came to the right place then, huh? You got to meet six!"

I look at him and shake my head. "Five." I point at Error, still sleeping peacefully. "I haven't properly met that one yet." Nightmare stands up and makes his way to Error. "We can fix that." Nightmare slaps Error and yells at him. "Get up dumbass!" Error jolts awake and looks around with wild eyelights. He fixes his gaze on Nightmare and growls. "DAmN yOu! WhY ThE hEll DiD yoU waKE mE Up!" Nightmare responds calmly and nods in my direction. "Go thank the girl that saved your life." Error looks in my direction and freezes. I swear his cheekbones turn yellow for a second, but then it vanishes.

He grumbles to himself, but he still makes his way over to me. He shoves Killer off of me and looks me dead in the eyes. "THaNks, I guEsS." I nod happily at him and smile. "My pleasure!" The yellow tint on his cheekbones returns, but he looks away from me. Horror makes his way next to me and pokes my cheek. "You smile an awful lot human." I laugh at this and Horror keeps poking my cheek. "Haha! I'm just happy I got the chance to meet you all."

Every one of them looks my way, a different tint coloring their cheekbones. I'm pretty sure this is blush, but even so, I push it aside. My brain is starting to shut down and sleep is starting to take over, so a bunch of lovesick skeletons is the last thing on my mind. I lie down on the cold floor of the cave and close my eyes. "I'll be off in the morning, so I'm gonna try and get as much sleep as I can tonight."

I'm about to drift off, when someone lifts me up. It's Dust. He leans me up against himself and avoids eye contact. "You shouldn't sleep on the hard stone. It could hurt you." My cheeks heat up and I try to get up, but Cross stops me. He lies down across my lap and looks up at me with a smile. "Beauty rest is important for a lady."

Error decides to somewhat join in on this little party and partly wraps a wing around me. He doesn't look at me at all and I believe his eye sockets are closed, but he still speaks. "Even with your healing magic, sickness isn't a good thing to have in these mountains." I close my eyes, the comfort from all of these skeletal dragons lulling me to sleep. I hear some of the others speak, but the voices are distant. Before long, sleep takes over.
