Luke woke up in a groggily. His hair was a disheveled mess and his breath tasted stale. He rolled over onto his back and scratched his thigh. His brother lay on his bed in a heap of blankets and pillows and was snoring rather loudly.

Luke groaned as he sat up and checked the time on his iPod. He squinted through the brightness and waited for his eyes to adjust. It read 6:32. He then heaved himself out of his bed and onto the ground. He made his way to the bathroom and took a short shower.

After the shower, Luke dried off and dressed himself in a pair of destroyed jeans and a floral print shirt. He then went into the bathroom again and went through his everyday hair process.

In another 20 minutes or so, Luke was ready for the day. When his ride arrived to school, he headed out the front door of his house and sat down in the back of the Dodge minivan that Mrs. Warnock (the carpool driver) drove. Luke busied himself by thinking about the upcoming day. He remembered that he'd have a test in history and an assembly for high school orientation for the next year. he sighed out loud. Just thinking about not being able to be with his friends in high school made him sad. After the 8th grade was over, Luke would be moving to Wisconsin. His dad had accepted a job as one of the head family practitioners at a hospital chain. Luke hated moving.

They arrived at Irish Jr. High about 4 minutes before the tardy bell rang. He grabbed his thing and thanked Mrs. Warnock for the ride. He made his way into the building and up to his home room. Just as he entered the classroom, Mr. Budwiser was handing out the test. Luke sat down at his chair in a huff and looked at the test. He knew most of the material, but didn't really want to do it.

When class was over, Luke met up with Abernathy and started walking to their second class of the day.

"Did you finish the essay for Mrs. Adamson?" Abernathy asked.

"Ha, I haven't even started." Luke replied in a nonchalant tone.

"It was due today."

"No, it's due tomorrow."

"Bro, it due today." Abernathy said as smile grew on his face.

"I could have sworn she said it was due tomorrow."

Luke's stomach sank. His parents were getting picky about his grades and this zero wouldn't make them happy.

"Ugh. I swear if it's due today I'm gonna shoot someone."

Abernathy and Luke walked into class and sat down in their seats. Luke grumpily took about a blank sheet of
paper and started on his essay that was supposedly "due" today according to Abernathy.

"Good morning class." said a voice other than Mrs. Adamson's.

Luke looked up to see an older woman with balding grey hair and glasses.

"As you all know, I'm Ms. Nazzario and I will be subbing for Mrs. Adamson today who is out sick."

Ms. Nazzario was a teacher's assistant and subbed for different teachers on a regular basis.

"Now I'm going to go through role and I only want you to answer with here or present." She started to go through the list of names.

"Kyle Bridenstien?"

"Here."

"Becky Gitzenhower?"

"Present."

When Ms. Nazzario reached the k's was when things got interesting.

"Samuel Keith?"

"Here's your present!" Samuel said smugly at his thought of his pun.

The entire room burst out laughing, except Ms. Nazzario.

"You may sit out in the hall, Mr. Keith."

The class ceased laughing and trained their eyes on Samuel. Samuel looked confused, but obliged to the order. Everybody looked to one another, but Ms. Nazzario continued with the role as if nothing happened.

"Bethany Nylander."

"H-here." she stammered in shock as the rest of the class was with the event that had just taken place.

After role, they were instructed that they would be watching a video that was going to be tested over the next day when Mrs. Adamson gets back.
Luke worried for Samuel, who would probably miss out on a lot of the video.

The video they were watching was about Martin Luther King Jr., and was really strange. It referred to Martin's father as "Daddy King" and talked about the involvements he had with the KKK. It overall made very little sense.

A few minutes after the video ended, the bell rang. Luke realized Ms. Nazzario had not remembered to let Samuel in! Pushing this troubling news out if his mind, he gathered his stuff and walked out of the classroom. Ms. Nazzario was walking out in front of Luke through the door that Samuel was holding open for the class. She smiled and thanked him for his deed and Samuel looked as confused as he did when she sent him out.

"Oh old people." Luke chuckled under his breath as he walked on to his 3rd hour.
