Freedom. Freedom was what Awsten finally had after four long years of high school, but now he had no idea what to do. He had never really had huge plans for his future other than going to college and just living out the rest of his life.
What could he do? Go to Whataburger with Otto? Walk his dogs? Sleep? There was nothing. Nothing for the poor Houston boy who was drowning in his own boredom. At this point, he'd take back going to high school.
Or not.
Awsten sat up from his bed and stared at his phone. It wasn't too late, around six p.m. He tapped his fingers against the side of his phone before unlocking it and heading to Otto's contact.
Hey, he types. Not long after, Otto replied.
Hi Awsten, his message read.
I'm bored.
Me too.
Wanna go to Whataburger?
Sure.
With that, Awsten stood up and stretched his arms out. He glanced at himself in the mirror. Gray sweatpants and a red hoodie. Awsten headed to his closet and picked out some jeans that would be more suited for public wear. After changing, he grabbed his phone and headed downstairs.
"Hey Awsten, where are 'ya heading?" Awsten's sister, Gracie, asked.
"Gonna go see Otto. Do you want anything from Whataburger?" Awsten slipped on his black Vans and grabbed his car keys.
"Yeah, can you get me some soda? Coke." Gracie requested. Awsten nodded and said his goodbye before leaving.
The drive wasn't too long, his neighborhood was actually pretty close to a Whataburger, and it wasn't too long until Otto's car parked next to Awsten's.
The two both hopped out of their vehicles and greeted each other before heading inside.
"When did you dye your hair again?" Otto asked, eyeing the vibrant purple on the top of his head.
"Last night. I got bored." Awsten shrugged.
"Again? Dude, you're always bored." Otto rested his elbow on the table.
"Yeah, well there's not much to do, anyways. What do you want me to do? Go for a run?" Awsten sighed. Otto raised an eyebrow. "No, I'm not gonna go on a run with you, Otto. Not everyone is coordinated as you." He shook his head.
"The offer's still available." Otto grinned. Awsten rolled his eyes with a smile.
"Order seventy-four?"
"I got it," Awsten told Otto before standing up and going to the front to get their food. He heard the door open behind him, but he didn't pay attention to it.
"I don't understand how you wear hoodies in the middle of summer," Otto pointed out as Awsten sat down with the tray.
"They're comfy. I don't mind the heat too much." Awsten shrugged. He noticed a small group of people walk by and sit a couple tables away from them. They didn't seem to notice Awsten though.
"Didn't those people go to our school?" Awsten pointed at the group, finding one particular person far too familiar for his liking. Otto turned and nodded his head.
"Yeah, it's that one group with like... Jack and Patty and Geoff—" Otto immediately stopped himself from talking when he said the last name.
Geoff Wigington.
Awsten was too tired to recognize him at first, but there he was, all with his dumb denim jacket and nose ring.
No matter how hard Awsten would try, he couldn't find any good memories related to the asshole. Everything associated with him was bad to Awsten.
