Chapter 5

A few weeks later, Lyra was in an unexplainable good mood when she woke up on a Wednesday morning. She had Science, which had quickly grown into her favorite subject, and a few other classes she liked. None of the ones she didn't like. The day was a lot more peaceful due to the fact that all of the annoying guys were either out sick or in ISS, and it was wonderful. 'Ahh, what a beautiful day! The sun is shining, the temperature is just right, no nincompoops irritating me... How could this day get any better? Nothing can ruin this perfect day!' Little did she know, but something was about to ruin that perfect day. She had been doing a good job at hiding her crush from her friends, but that was about to change. Big time. At lunch, she sat down with her friends, in the seat adjacent to the vending machine that was next to the lunch line. She saw Nate walk over to the vending machine, and felt her heartbeat quicken a little, as it always did when he was around. She guessed she must have been staring for quite a while, because next thing she knew, Meghan's hand was waving in front of her face. "Hey Lyra, what're you looking at?" She asked with a smirk. Lyra silently panicked for a split second. She had evaded them finding out for the first three weeks or so, she didn't want them to find out now. "N-Nothing..." She replied hastily. Meghan gasped and put her hands over her mouth. "You were staring!!! So, what's his name? Is he cute?" lyra looked down at her sandwich, blushing madly. "I would prefer to not talk about it..." She said quietly. "Aww, come on!" She persisted for about 10 minutes. About five minutes in, everyone else joined in, until Lyra finally cracked. "Fine!! I'll tell you... Just don't tell him, whatever you do, ok?" A couple of them nodded, the others just looked at her enthusiastically. "His name's Nate, ok? He's in my class, and I think he's a nice guy..." She said. "And kinda cute..." She added under her breath. Luckily nobody heard that. Ally looked at her, a confused look on her face. "Why him?" She asked. "I dunno... He's a nice guy, he's not dumb like almost all the other guys I know... Stuff like that." She replied softly. "Meh. We all have our own reasons for liking who we like. Let's go outside, I'm boiling!" Makayla said. The group walked outside, and hung out under the large oak tree for a while, an then they kept walking. Soon, they spotted Nate. Ally looked like she was plotting something. A horrible fear began to tie knots in Lyra's stomach. 'No...! She wouldn't!' But she did. "Hey, Nate!" He turned toward Lyra and her friends. She panicked. "Hi." She said to him, the panicked fear beginning to course through her as she speedwalked away. But then, she froze in her tracks as she heard Ally saying; "She likes you."
