Chapter 6: Re-ignite or Reject?

"Laza..." Brant said as he took a step towards me, reaching out a hand. I almost met him, and I would have if I hadn't see the gleam in his eyes. They didn't hold regret or even sorrow at the way he had treated me, only lust. I had to admit, a small part of me was hoping... Oh I couldn't think about the 'what ifs' it didn't matter anyway, just what was and nothing more.

I recoiled like a cobra as a growl came from my wolf side at his approach. Even though he was technically my mate, he had rejected me; even if it was before I knew it.

"Laza please." He started. I growled again as I took a step backwards. Alpha Redforce was about to step in when SilverFang held up a hand for him to stay out of it. I sighed internally at his failed attempt to help me. The list of reasons to dislike SIlverFang was growing.

"Laza, you have to listen to me." Brant continued. "I--I love you." Shock must have shown on my face for the whole world to see, let alone everyone in the clearing. This time when he took a step forward, I was too surprised to take another back, and I was trapped in his embrace.

As he barried his face into my neck I couldn't help but take in his wonderful scent. 'No.' The quiet word roared in my ears as I pulled away from him. "No." I said aloud this time. "No, you rejected me when you claimed Marcie." I said with a bit of new-found confidence. Where was that bitch anyway? I thought as I looked around the clearing for her long red hair.

The look of utter despair and disappointment fell upon Brant;s face a s his hand dropped to his side. Anger replaced his sorrow as he balled his fists. "Laza, I'm done with her. I was wrong when I claimed her as my own; so wrong..." He sighed out the last part as he looked in my eyes hopefully.

Doubt filled my mind at his words; the mate bond lingering at the back of my head. SilverFang stood just out of my line of vision as I choked on what to say. What could I say to my best friend that just so happened to be my mate? Then the thought crept in; he had betrayed me. And I held on; onto that hate that burned from his actions and Marcie's devious ways. Hate was something I could work with.

My inner wolf stirred at the sudden attention to my darker needs and I bit back a growl. "Brant, I-" I started as a thundering of footsteps up to our little awkward gathering. "Brant-ee!" Marcie came out from the bushes and flung herself on top of the man who was meant to be mine.

I don't know if it was my wolf instincts or 'fire' powers that made a hot coal bury itself deep in the pit of my stomache. I didn't have much control as I phased and grabbed her by the back of her tube top and flung her several feet away from Brant. 'MINE!' My wolf shouted through the pack link; broadcasting it to anyone who would say otherwise.

Marcie's eyes widened at my sudden aggression and then threw back her head and laughed. "Oh no, honey." She stood; looking at me through her crimson hair. "He's MINE!" She roared as she leapt at me as her pelt rippled red across her body.

Grace and the others rushed up as Marcie and I clashed with high pitched yelps and growls. Alpha RedForce took a step trying to separate us, but was stopped us abruptly as SilverFang put up a wrinkled hand. "She must beat this on her own." He said, almost as if he had aged ten years since the past five minutes.

"Laza!" I heard Grace scream just as Marcie snapped her jaws around my neck. I didn't see what happened next, for all I saw was red as I reared up and came crashing down into the dust on top of her glossy pelt.

Her teeth bit down harder, not letting go even when blood squirted from the wounds they were creating. I was whipping her around like a ragdoll on a wild bull, but still she held on, and I was losing conscience with each head pounding second. My claws racked down her face as I desparately tried to pull her away.
