Cassandra closed her eyes, blocking out the laughter that floated around her. She knew they were just trying to help, but she couldn't take it anymore. She stood up abruptly, calling all attention to her.
"I have to go," she mumbled, and turned, running out of Treyton's bedroom and down the long flight of stairs. She paused a moment in the kitchen to thank Alaska, Treyton's mom, for inviting her to lunch, then dashed out the door and took off down the street.
Her skin tingled at the wonderful sensation of warm New Mexico sun touching her bare shoulders, sending surges of heat through her whole body. A light breeze picked up, blowing golden strands of hair out of Cassandra's face. Despite the beautiful weather, a grey cloud hung low over the girl's head, filled with regret and fear.
Before she knew it, Cassandra had reached 207 Hanton street. She rummaged around in her purse for her keys and unlocked the door. Since no one else was home, she locked the door behind her and headed upstairs. Setting her things on the black and white bed, she grabbed a towel from the cupboard in the hallway and placed it on the shelf in her bathroom. The girl turned on the hot water and stripped naked. She stepped in and sighed as the steaming water ran over her body, washing away built-up dirt and some of the stress from the past week.Cassandra sat on her bed, wrapped in a fluffy warm towel. She checked her phone. Three missed calls from Treyton, two from Anna and three more from Brooke. There were also about 20 text messages all somewhere along the lines of 'where are you?', but no word from Vanessa. They had been inseparable friends until a week ago when Jane, the popular girl at school, had accused Cassandra of kissing Treyton, Vanessa's boyfriend. For some reason, Vanessa had believed her and broken up with Treyton, not listening to either his or her ex-best friend's protests. The catch was that it was true. Cassandra and Treyton had been at a party, and, under the influence of underage drinking, had made out behind a bush. This was the reason Cassandra felt so terrible. This whole huge mess was her fault. And to get in this big of a fight with her best friend over a boy??
It was ridiculous. But Vanessa had not even so much as glanced her way at school, let alone answered her pleading texts and calls.
Cassandra sighed, stood up, and grabbed some clean clothes to change into. She just had to wait it out...Vanessa would eventually come back.
