She looked up at Mr Hurst with her big brown eyes.
"You mean I got the job?" she asked excitedly.
"Yeah I do, Ms Matthews." He answered. "Now go and take table nr 9."
"Yes sir. " Riley quickly reached for her pen and notebook. Time for her first customer. She stepped out of the kitchen and started walking through the rows of tables. When she reached table 9 her eyes widened and she couldn't help letting out a happy squeak of joy.
"Farkley, is that really you?!"
The guy sitting by the table looked up from the menu he was holding in his hands and their eyes met. "Riley! It's so good to see you." He rose to give her a hug. "You work here?"
"Yeah, you're my first customer" , she answered happily.
"Well, I'm honored" , he said with a smile and sat down again. "So how've you been?"
"Good. I'm so happy I got this job."
"Then I better not make you lose it." Farkle chuckled as he reached for the menu again, "I'll take a raspberry smoothie." Riley nodded and scribbled it down in the notebook.
"Anything else?" she asked.
"Yeah, I actually came to London to see you. So when are you free?"
"What about we meet here again by 6 pm and then we can go to my house."
"Sounds great. See you later then."
"See you." Riley hurried into the kitchen. "One raspberry smoothie for table 9."
"Got it."
She hurried out again and went to another table.
-----
"Bye, I'm going home now." Riley said as she hung up her apron in her locker.
"Okay, good job today Matthews".
As she went outside of the restaurant she could see Farkle waiting underneath the streetlight, talking on the phone. She didn't want to disturb him so she decided to stop a couple of steps behind him. He had grown so much since they last saw each other. It had been for Christmas at her grandparents house in Philadelphia, about two years ago. Finally it seemed like he was done talking and as he put his phone in his pocket he turned around.
"Oh Riley, you're already here. Why didn't you say something?"
She smiled at him, "Didn't want to disturb you. Who was it anyway?"
"My mom" he answered as they walked down the street.
"Yeah right, how are they? your parents."
"They're fine, both of them. How are your parents? And Auggie?"
"Mom and dad are fine. Though I'm a bit worried about Auggie he has it tough in school."
"Bullies?" Farkle asked worried.
"I don't really know, he won't tell."
"Well we've both been through it." , Farkle said and they both thought back to how it had been. Horrible.
"You're right I'll talk to dad about it." They reached her apartment, "So stairs or elevator?" she said jokingly.
Farkle couldn't help but laugh. "Actually I prefer stairs nowadays."
"Sure, since I asked. But why do you prefer stairs?" Riley asked, curious. "You used to love taking the elevator."
"Yeah, until I got stuck in an elevator with.." he took a deep breath. "..with Smackle."
"Right, how is she doing?" Riley asked as they started walking up the stairs.
"Er..guess she's fine."
"What do you mean?"
"Riley we are no longer together, me and Smackle."
Riley stopped and turned towards him.
"No..What happened?." Stupid mouth. "I'm so sorry Farkle you don't have to tell me." she apologised and started walking again. But as she realized Farkle wasn't following, she once again turned around and found him staring at the floor.
"She said she no longer had these feelings for me. I mean, what is that supposed to mean? Of course I understand it perfectly and we're still friends. But everytime I'm with her, I miss her."
