Darcy Mallard stared out the bus window, missing that faraway place called home. She'd just been discharged from the military, with nothing left but the clothes on her back, a small backpack full of essentials, and her name.
But a home? That she hadn't had in a good 13 years. Not since she left when she was 18 to join the military, specifically a special ops unit run by something called S.H.U.S.H. Since then, she'd been everywhere and nowhere. The places she'd stayed were nice, most of the time - but not her home. That she had lost long ago.
"Now entering the city of Saint Canard," the bus driver said, bringing Darcy out of her reverie. "Last stop. Unless you want to ride all the way back to where we came from."With a deep breath, Darcy straightened up in her seat and actually concentrated on the scene outside. Skyscrapers loomed in the skyline, street lights lit the already dimming sky, accenting the gray concrete sidewalk and giving the crowd of people meandering around a yellowish tint. With a smile, she remembered how she'd once been one of those people. Wandering around, window shopping, or picking up groceries with her brother....
Saint Canard had been her home a long time ago. It was the city that never slept... most nights, anyway. Tonight seemed to be one of those sleepless nights. Darcy knew she wasn't going to get any sleep tonight, anyways.
As the bus pulled up to the bus stop, Darcy stood up. Carefully, so as not to step on anyone's feet, she began moving towards the front. Somehow, though, she still seemed to hit someone.
"Watch it lady." some homeless guy muttered.
"Sorry," Darcy replied as she kept moving forward. Squeezing between seats and walking down the stairs. Stepping onto the cold concrete.
As she did, a feeling that was a mixture of homesickness, fear, and relief flowed through her. This place was her home. It was where her family was, her past, and now, her future.
She'd grown up here.
Her brother was here.
So why didn't this feel like home?
Looking around at the people around the bus stop, Darcy searched for her brother. She'd called him and asked him if he would mind picking her up. He had, after expressing excitement and surprise, said he would. Now, if only she could find him...
"Excuse me - pardon me ma'am," a familiar voice said. Darcy turned around to see a duck of her height, with the same colored hair as her pushing his way through the crowd. His eyes were scanning over the passengers exiting the bus - and somehow glanced right over her.
"Drake?" Darcy asked, smiling as she moved towards him. As of now, she didn't care how many feet she stepped on - all she cared about right now was getting to him. "Drake - over here!"
"Darcy?" Drake said, his eyes falling on her. They widened as he took in his sister. Long, white hair braided down her back, a dark green army shirt with one of her signature purple jackets...and a face that looked like it was aged beyond its years. "Is that really you?"
"Don't tell me you don't recognize me!" Darcy said, taking in her brother's appearance. His hair was a lot shorter than it was last time she'd seen him. And his outfit made him look a lot more grown up. A peach collared shirt with a green sweater-vest - dressed this way he looked a lot like their dad. "I mean it hasn't been that long and - geez you look a lot like dad."
"Heh," Drake said, rubbing the back of his head. "I don't look that old, do I? Besides - you're one to talk, look at your hair! It's so long now."
"Yeah..." Darcy said, smiling. It felt good to be back here. On instinct, she glanced around for their parents, before remembering that they were dead. Clearing her throat, she looked back at her brother and tried to think of something to say. Nothing came to mind. Thankfully, Drake could think of something.
