Chapter 13: Day 6: Frost Giants

Bruce and Tony let me join their alliance. It was obviously something they had both thought about a lot, but I didn’t quite understand why they had come to their decision. Was I bait for the other heroes? Worse, was I bait for Jackson? Perhaps they were going to use me to wait out until the next challenge and then leave me to get a head start so they could get away.

I woke the next morning, on day six of the Marvel Games to find Bruce and Tony gone from where I had last seen them before I’d slipped into the comforting abyss of sleep. There was a banging and scuffling noise coming from just outside of the room we were staying in, and without Bruce and Tony here to protect me, I had no choice, I was going to have to check it out myself.

Scrambling up to my feet, I grabbed as many altered Hydra weapons as I could in a feeble attempt to protect myself. I had a hand gun shoved in my pants, another bigger gun slung over my back and another in my hands, ready to fire at a moment’s notice.

“Bruce?” I called out, the reply I got was a roar, deafening and high pitched, like nails down a chalkboard. I cringed and inched my way towards the noise.

The closer I got, the more I could faintly hear the sound of voices. One of them sounded distinctly like Tony’s.

“Bruce, you gotta go get, Stell. Get her and get the hell out of here!” Tony shouted.

“No way Tony. You go get her, I’ll just...” Bruce trailed off as another shriek and roar over came us all and I ran towards them.

“What the hell is happening?” I exclaimed over the noise on the other side of the door.

“Frost giants!” Bruce and Tony shouted in unison. I felt my bones go cold and a shiver slink its way down my spine.

Frost giants, from Jotunheim, one of the nine realms. Last I heard, Loki had destroyed them when he destroyed the bi-frost in Asgard. Maybe my information was wrong, but from the sound of it –Bruce and Tony definitely weren’t lying. I didn’t know what to do; I didn’t know the first thing about defending myself against intergalactic threats!

Tony only had half of his suit, so he couldn’t do much either. The only person who could help us right now was the Hulk –Thor too, but I didn’t see him close by.

My heart was hammering in my chest, pumping blood so fast that I could hear and feel it in my ears. I needed to think, let things happen and find a way out of it.

We needed a distraction.

“Bruce!” I called. “Now would be a really great time for you to get angry!”

“Are you insane?” Tony exclaimed, “He’ll kill us all in this tiny space!”

“No, Tony, she’s right.” Bruce said, just loud enough for me to hear.

“Bruce, if you Hulk up, you can distract them while Tony and I make a run for it.” I told them, “After things die down, meet us on the bridge. We’ll wait there until tomorrow morning.”

Bruce nodded and signalled for us to move back.

What happened next was something I never wanted to see again.

First, Bruce’s eyes turned black, like there wasn’t anything left of him inside his head. He let out an animalistic groan that turned into a cry.

“Bruce!” I called out, lurching forward towards him, only to have Tony pull me back. I wanted to tell Bruce to stop, that he didn’t have to cause himself pain and that we could get through it without the Hulk. But I knew that was wrong, we needed the Hulk as a distraction or we were all going to die.
